Am I just Mental Or do I have a Illness

article image placeholderUploaded by @Nouvelle
So a conversation I wanted to get into was like, do you feel what you go through in life really creates your mental instability? Or do you feel that it's something that is really a part of your DNA makeup? Like, you know how they say if your mother's bipolar, then you're going to inherit bipolarism and things like that? Or do you feel it's more of a circumstantial type of thing? For me, I do have different elements of mental health crises

The third category is acquired, which again goes back to environmental, but the acquired being what happened to your childhood, what happened to your young adulthood, what are things that you are exposing yourself to different triggers and traumas that you've been exposed to and subjected to that then influence your mental health? What's important is that we use the community resources that we have, whether you are insured or not insured, so that you can support your mental health needs

@Nouvelle Yes!

I think there's value in it because if I didn't have an understanding of autism to begin with, then I wouldn't be able to know how to better care for myself, better manage my emotions and my sensory issues and everything, right?

And to get an autism diagnosis, you have to have multiple hours long sessions and be evaluated before you finally get that label. And the only people who seem to have a problem with self diagnosis are people on the outside. And really, if it changes someone's life for the better, what difference does it make to anybody else? I think I'll shut up now, but I have much more, many more thoughts on the things on the topic. And so welcome to someone

@SeekingPlumb IM AUTISTIC TOO ❀️

First off, thank you for commenting on my post. And actually, I am autistic as well. I was diagnosed about four years ago after I started actually having seizures, but they found out, like, I was having what's called pseudo seizures, and it really was just seizures brought on by stress. So, hello, neighbor. But yes, you are right. Being in the autism realm, it's very different, especially for females

Every part of your body should have a specialist connected to it so that you're functioning 100% in a full blown healthy way. So yes, I definitely agree that utilizing your resources is a must. I feel like the only issue is even when it comes to resources, sometimes there's little to none and then you have to go outside of your home area to get more resources and that's when it becomes like a sticky situation. But yeah, I feel like mental health is very important

But it's one of those things, right? You can't necessarily say anything because there's still so much stigma attached to the labels and let alone our perceptions of self. And it's like you sort of have to break through these ideas in order to have this embracing of and celebrating of autistic self

It may sound lofty, but read what group members have said, including that it has been life changing! This group was started because I was hearing that there are such limited resources for autistic adults, especially when you're late diagnosed. It's been amazing to come together and witness the tremendous growth of the participants. There are a couple spots that came open for the October group. I know schizophrenia can occur later on in a person's life where they were fine for the most part but leading up until that moment they started having symptoms with it. So I think it's too soon to truly know how mental illness is formed in the mind. Is it nature or nurture? It can sometimes occur where a person has had no history of mental illnesses. They're family anyway, family tree, but they still can get it

@SeekingPlumb Thank you!

But I really thank you for posting and it's nice to have another fellow autistic woman in the mix and I would love to hear more of you and I'm glad that you are able to find some resources that do allow you to be free and be you. So thank you, sir, so much for commenting and sending you nothing but positive energy and positive vibes
