What is your earliest childhood memory?

article image placeholderUploaded by @jsmwang
His first memory was he was like a baby in Slovenia, and he remembers snow falling on him for the first time and feeling the cold and tasting it, being like, what is this? So, yeah, I would love to hear your memories. And I wanted to introduce myself, and I also attached a photo of my two pet door, France. So, yeah, let me know what your first memories are

"Grandmas Apartment" @jsmwang

And it was so, like, soothing. We remember Grandma's apartment was so soothing because it was like a combination of these sounds, these smells, these colors. Grandma was just in the background of this experience we were having as a child. But, yeah, just wanted to share that because as you were speaking, actually, this memory just flooded to our mind. We don't know why, but honestly, it's a good spot for us

It just occurred to me while you're talking like the way you're talking about the kitchen with so much food coming out of it, that wonder, the cold jam, the grandfather clock. And my favorite is like the carpet that just became your whole imaginary world. Just like how when you are a child, every detail or the details that you remember stick out so much. And I feel like yeah, I don't know

So I remember retreating to that room all the time to hide from whatever horror movie I shouldn't have been watching. But, yeah, I just remember specific rooms in the apartment. Thank you for posting this. Well, this question was very interesting and brought back a lot of interesting memories of living in that apartment and actually went to go look at some pictures that I had in my photo book of living in that apartment

I feel like as a kid, you always have these little hiding spaces that no one knows about or they do know about, but you think they don't know about. And your small body can just fit in, like, the places that you can't even imagine fitting in now. Yeah. That's a lovely memory. Thank you for sharing

@jsmwang Bouncing baby!

I had to think about this. And to be honest, I'm not exactly sure how much of this is memory and how much of this was recreated from the things that my family told me. But I do have a feeling attached to it, so I think it's a mixture of both. Okay, so this may take me a little bit, but whatever

That is an awesome memory. So they just hung you in the middle of the doorway and left you there to jump. Sounds like bungee jumping for a baby. I love that memory. And as for more like memories that we kind of recreate over the years, I read this thing once, and I'm not sure how accurate it is, but every time you take out a memory and you kind of recall it, you alter it in some way and then again and again

So whether it was a good experience that I create a more rosy image of or a bad experience that I could reshape it, recreate it to be of value in a different way. Instead of going down the road of recreating it and making it worse, I can shift the perspective, spin it around, flip it upside down and say, look, this is another way to look at it and all of that reshapes who I am. I really like that. Thank you

It was a lot of growing up with narcissistic parents, so I have three kids and I am trying to make sure to get their first memories because my parents moved out of their house that we grew up in when I was 23. I believe my mom wanted to just travel with my dad when he worked because my dad travels for work. He's a mechanic and my older sister, she's six years older than me, had two Xerox boxes full of childhood pictures and memories and school stuff

But for me, what is so amazing about your story is the fact that you were able to pinpoint your refuge, that memory of the tree and how that developed into painting and singing. I think you mentioned. And it really made me feel like it doesn't matter where we come from. It really just matters what we do with it. And it sounds like you channeled that creatively and also for your children. It's really touching to me how you want to give them happy early memories

Hello. I like the like subject matter caught my attention. One of my earliest memories is my hands got damaged through frostbite at the age of about two years old. Two, three years old. And my brother and I both suffered from damage from frostbite where in my case, the tissues are damaged and caused severe stubbornness to my hands. My palms are all right, but my fingers were really knuckles were kind of condensed in. I played sports throughout my life

That is such a visceral first memory. It sounds really painful and scary. And also, it sounds like you have a mark or like a physical indication that people ask about that you've carried through your life. Let me know if I got that right. But I appreciate this memory and I will add it to my library of memories. Thank you

Would it be okay if I did this? And I was like, Kim, why are you asking me this? We're friends. I said, of course you can. Of course you can, because we're changing, but we will always be friends. I never forget when I got that letter. I was in middle school, junior high, and I was in middle school. And I get this letter from her from Oregon asking me if she could have a boyfriend. I just laughed
