Lizzo and James Madison's Flute: Disrespectful or Inspirational

article image placeholderFOLLOW @YITTY on Twitter
And they're also learning that Dr. Hayden is the first woman and first African American woman that is overseeing the library of Congress. Now. Being older. I can definitely see the point of. Hey. Twerking may not be the best of things to do. But however. If that inspires kids to actually look up the library of Congress and actually know about the Library of Congress and maybe not just kids. But everybody

My perspective on this is just find it funny, or rather not funny, that no matter what black people do or no matter what excellence is showcased in the media, there's always going to be people that are going to bring it down. It's ironic that you mentioned this Madison fellow was a former slave owner. No surprises there. But I think it's inspirational for that reason

Stop thinking about the attention that you will receive. Think about the damage that you're causing. Or be thoughtful and mindful. Right? And I just think she, in my opinion, celebrities in general do a lot of self serving, self promoting for self gratification. And what she did, again, I don't find it inspirational

I do think it's interesting, just from a historical context, that I guess this flute has not been played in a very long time, and the previous owner was someone who owned a lot of slaves. And so I do think it's a kind of nice slap in the face to him that the flu is being played by a black woman, because I'm sure he would not have approved of that and screw them. James Madison was not a good guy, nor were many of his constituents

@daily The Mapouka dance

Ironically, the Twerking style of dance originates from the Mapuka Dance, which is a centuries old dance from Africa. So Lizzo's playing old flute that was used in some socalled important ceremony, government inauguration of a president, these are all constructs of a civilized world. The Mapuka Dance is older than all of those constructs of the civilized world. And just because it accentuates a female body part, so people would say, okay, it's a sexual dance, then they're offended so much

This shows that music education is important.

A lot of kids use iPads in schools today, and they're using GarageBand in their musical classes. So that's a very huge thing there. So thank you for bringing this up. Keep music at the forefront of our education and so that children can have a balanced education and be able to one day be able to go to the Library Congress itself and see it. And the other thing that I would encourage people to do is I've done this with my daughter. She's nine years old

And you made a good point that sometimes they love to give black people a very hard time. Sometimes black women can be over sexualized. So Twerking goes pretty far back. Right. If you look at a lot of slaves came from Nigeria, if you look at some of their traditional dancing, if you look at some of their traditional dances, it makes a lot of sense. Where we get it from. Twerking goes pretty far back. What's kind of crazy is that?
