The Homogenization Of Beauty

article image placeholderUploaded by @FryedOreo
No, even now it's a stunning woman. But why is she stunning? For me, in Lizzo, some guys will unanimously say, no, that's not what I see as appealing. I have the answers to some of these questions, but that will require the participation of you listening. Thank you for that, by the way

Are you attracted to what you like or what they say you should like?

I truly do. Well, several things, I will say. But one, as you were talking about the hair, I'm so glad. I don't know how it is in your neck of the woods, but on my neck of the woods, to see a black woman with any chemicals in her hair outside of hair dye is almost rare

Maybe it was like maybe a few weeks ago you said the winners are the ones who write history or something like that, you said. So it makes sense that the ones that are empowered, they're going to set these standards, these qualifications of what beauty is. We see it all the time. We see it everywhere. Even in African countries, right? What is crazy, in West Africa, a lot of the models are Europeans

But I think with the black experience, especially black women, because women in general have it harder for beauty standards because it is one that is built by the patriarchy system that services the man. So a lot of the image, what is popular out there, what sells is to aid to a man to some variant degree in terms of these products and who gets money off of them, who makes the money. The standards homogenized to capitalize

When I'm on the dating apps, I notice it. When I'm on the dating apps on bumble and I'm swiping left and I'm swiping right, I'm noticing women look the same. It's the same poses, it's the same hairstyles, it's the same eyebrows and all that stuff. And I mean, you can find that in culture. To culture to culture, right? But I guess it's so prominent now where everyone's looking the same

I tried to do some quick research, but I see I'm going to have to do some deep research. I even google black British women hairstyles. No, I just google black British women from black women from the UK. And they all have natural hairstyles. Now, they're either like first generation or they're descendants from the slave. But regardless, they all wear their natural hairstyles. And it's kind of similar to their hairstyles

But if you grew up in that time where you thought light skin did long hair was the thing, then you still hold on to that, then that's on you. But the standard of beauty is not what we see, it's what we want to see. And we're seeing a lot of more people embrace the natural beauty than what society says is the standard of beauty. So that's just my opinion. You got to embrace the skin that you're in

I don't know if they're listening to this one or not, but yeah, with that UK black woman experience, yeah, I would love to find out some information about that myself. But you and I, Demarkis, we went to see that film Good Hair, and for me, it was such a powerful thing. Like, even I just checked in research now, the synthetic hair industry in 2020 was worth an estimated $2.23 billion with a B. So it's a big industry

But there are standards that us as humans tend to fall under more often than not. But best believe. My kids that I'm raising right now, my little girls that I'm raising right now, very believe. I'm going to tell them beauty is within, but I'm not going to get mad at them if one day they decide to follow in a standard of beauty that others do. Because I did the same thing as a kid, I do the same thing now. That's life

You think I'm going to let them pull out my hair? No, I'm going to wear these wigs to protect my hair that has to be done every day. So, yes, they can curl and flip and toss this wig hair, but they're not going to be doing that to my hair and stress my hair out

But yes, not literally. Every woman is still getting permits to have their hair like that. But you don't even have to look. So far as the former First Lady of the United States, michelle Obama always had her hair straight. So even things is using a hot comb, not so much maybe with a perm relaxer, but even a hot comb that straight hairstyle is Eurasian in nature

And by the way, all different kinds of men. You know, even though I wasn't interested in going in another direction other than black men is my preference. That's my preference. I've had plenty of opportunity to date someone of a different ethnic or racial group, but I just wasn't going in that direction. I'm fine with my culture and as young as you are, my children's age, I'm just not getting it. Sounds antithetical to black women to me

Nowhere more in the hip hop culture do I see black folk stammering to reach that white status of being billionaires, being capitalists, not more to lift people up, but more to separate themselves and put the missing dropping down. Much as I gave an example of JayZ when he had some things to say about being called a capitalist. But you know, Cheryl, if that's how you feel about the post, I respect it. I respect you. But this is my post

Most recent in my memory, I think she dated Carmen for a while, and I'm sure there were others, but when she decided that she was going to date someone of another culture, he ended up giving her a diamond ring, a rock, and marrying her, taking her on in marriage. And so she wasted that time with folks like Common and whoever else, because they more than likely are thinking similar to how you have expressed yourself

I'll get you a jacket. And it's not something I agree with. It's just okay, go use it first, and I'll get you your quote. It's not that I agree with it, but I do acknowledge that it exists. And I think that's been the biggest misnomer here, is that it's not that I'm saying I agree with these beauty standards. I just recognize that they are beauty standards

I think you guys heard we heard black women and weave and it distorted the whole original topic. The whole original meaning is like, no more. It meant nothing. Because I hear some cherry picking going on here. And I've known this man for over 20 years. This man dated an African. So that's original black. I got to defend my brother even though he doesn't want me to. I'm pretty sure he doesn't. But I had to say something

Our creativity for the females, our natural curves. We're naturally curly girls. And there are people who go to spend a lot of money trying to emulate that. But do they really like us? No, they don't. They want to be us, but they don't like us. They like our style, but they don't really like us. We had a good challenging conversation, but I'm not mad at anyone. I'm not mad. Okay. Thank you so much

I didn't think you're mad at him in that sort of way. Yeah, I didn't think you were, like, mad, like, oh, I hate them. But, no, it's all fun. I thought we were having a great conversation. It's all play for me. I don't take anything serious on these audio apps. What a great conversation. I hope to have more we're with you in the near future. Peace out. Bye

A year ago, if I would have introduced this idea, I maybe would have got a few people to respond, but it would have just been that they would have responded, they would have said something, and they would have just kind of moved on about their day. But this has been the most important Swell I think I've made. Being on this app almost two years, four, it speaks so well to the character of our unique lives as people and Demarkis. Thank you
