Audiobooks on Spotify: Yay or Nay

article image placeholderCrying in H Mart: A Memoir
And Crying in HMRC is one of those books that has been on my library list for a long time that I usually have to wait for. And then by the time it becomes available, I'm already in the middle of another book and it's this whole process. But then I saw that the book was locked and I have to buy it. And I immediately changed my mind about books on Spotify. I do not want to have to pay extra to listen to books on Spotify

And if you're paying for each book, maybe you said this and I just, in my excitement, missed it, that it's not paying to sort of rent it, but it's paying to own it. So it's essentially repeating what Audible is doing

You have to buy each book, which is not something I'm keen on. Also, what I didn't find ideal, and maybe this will change at some point, but if you want to purchase the book, you have to purchase it via the web player, which I'm guessing you use on a laptop. But I've never used Spotify that way. And then you can download it to your phone and listen to it from there

But I guess that is going to be a tough swell, having to pay additionally for audiobooks, where you are kind of used to not having to pay at all. It kind of reminds me of Amazon Prime, their video prime they have where you can watch movies, but then they also have the movies that you have to pay for or TV shows you have to pay for. So it's kind of like swell. What's the point of it being displayed if I can't watch it?

And it's like some kind of system where you can just listen to books for free and it's already hard to make money as an author, but it would go right out the window entirely, and then no one would be motivated to write, and then slippery slope. But anyway, yeah, before I log off, I just wanted to say I like your method of renting books by celebs instead of paying for them

Alternatives

Hey, it's Ray Todd. I haven't been on here for a while, but I thought I'd chime in on this debate about Spotify and let you know that there are some alternatives to both Spotify and Audible. I'll go with the Audible alternative first, which is Chirp, and that's at Chirpbooks.com. Or you can get the app and there's no subscription. You buy each book individually, but they're at heavily discounted prices most of the time
