On productivity options in Virtual Reality

But this tries to emulate that in VR, using your actual computer to serve up applications and you can collaborate in virtual space so you can have other people get their headsets on wherever they are. They can patch in. You guys can work together, share screens. If they don't have a VR headset, they can use a 2D application on their computer to patch and collaborate with you. You can co work with strangers if you want to. I thought that was kind of a novel idea

Tried a virtual workspace app on Oculus Quest last night. SO cool. #VR #VirtualReality #OculusQuest

I have an Oculus Quest, definitely promising but resolution has to improve

Hey, Todd, I have an Oculus quest. I've only used it for, like, entertainment type of apps at NBA courtside and some of the other kind of roller coaster rides and things like that. The resolution on that last set I have is like a year old felt pretty bad in the sense that for really extended usage. Right? So yeah, you can live with it for some time for some fun apps, but for long term kind of usage

Some teams think the sweet spot is using it for occasional meetings.

That's true. I would be kind of curious to try that on one of the other sort of more high end headsets. But I hear that some businesses are having a lot of luck running planning meetings, and, you know, check in meetings is where you can sort of have your stuff in front of you. But you can also do that collaboration. So for that use, it seems to be popular right now, and I could definitely see it working out that way

But what I've observed from just people who Harvey used VR and who talk to me, they squarely fall in two camps, one that are instantly like in and they like it and they want to be in and they're comfortable. And then the other camp that gets ever so slightly disoriented and are uncomfortable with it and can't do extended periods, extended sessions. So from that, it seems like you do fall in the ladder. I suspect I might fall in the ladder myself

I can see as many movies a month as I want. Something like that in a VR environment where you can meet up with your friends in a virtual theater and watch a film. And once those lights drop, like I say, the experience is almost indiscernible from actually being at a theater would have been fantastic during this situation. And I saw a couple of years back, some company was working on Avatars that are modeled. You scan yourself in and your friends in a VR environment would see you

Attending a VR conference this week!

There are a bunch of devices supported, and then there's also a 2D mode, which I've looked around in my quest headset, but I'll mostly do 2D so I can sort of capture screenshots and do some recordings so I can sort of write things up day to day. So I'm kind of waiting for my schedule right now. I haven't heard back from their promoter yet, but here in the next hour or so, I'll be logging in and attending my first virtual reality conference

I am also very impressed with their current approach to AR, where they have tried to provide as much of the experience on the phones and double down on it. And frankly, a lot of cool apps have come about like the Ruler app on the iphone is super cool, where you can just use your phone to measure distances in the real world. And it is those apps that I'm talking about that I'm really looking forward to eventually in AR

I think the lowered costs for everyone would probably allow the events to further extend press passes like the one I got usually an event like GDC or Apple. They wouldn't get down as far as sort of outer blogosphere independent journalists like myself. And if it's this easy for them to do, they probably wouldn't think as much of saying, hey, yeah, come on and cover the event and create content and do your thing. That helps everybody. So I really love that

I always have to say to people when they say VR, I say, Are you talking about three degrees of freedom or six degrees of freedom because we make River Link and that's a classroom in a box that's three degrees of freedom. 360 Video and 2D video only can't pick anything up or interact with stuff. But six off obviously allows you to pick things up. And I think this is the massive confusion when people talk about VR
