The Climate Crisis: The Amazon Rainforest no longer a net carbon sink

article image placeholderAmazon rainforest now emitting more CO2 than it absorbs
I've always heard this is one of the great carbon sinks, one of the great places to store away carbon from the atmosphere and that the worry was we are still creating more fossil fuel emissions than the world's forests can absorb. Well, it turns out, based on atmospheric studies over the Amazon from 2010 to 2018, is that what we thought about the Amazon is no longer true. It's no longer sequestering carbon. The trees haven't changed their science, the physics and biology of trees

Oh, wow. That took some time to process, because ever since I was a little girl, I've been learning that the Amazon forest was this place, which absorbed all the carbon emissions from the rest of the world. But this is so truly sad, because humans have kind of partly destroyed such a vast and beautiful ecosystem. And that just makes me so sad. And I did not think this day would come so quickly. I thought it would take 100 more years. But here it is
