Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Scientist Nicole Yamase visits a place more remote than the moon 🌊

article image placeholderMicronesian scientist becomes first Pacific Islander to reach ocean
He went more than 50 years later, there was a 50 year gap in exploration of the Mariana Trench, and the reason that I was thinking about it this week is that I came across this rather lovely story about a scientist from the University of Hawaii, a graduate student there who is a citizen of the Federated States of Micronesia. And she was invited as a scientist, as a marine biologist and as a local citizen to visit the Mariana Trench

@Tim wishing I had the map

Tim, I'll never forget when I used to work in Washington, D. C. Visiting this office in the Pentagon of a Navy captain. And behind his desk was a map of the world under sea, and the mountainous terrain associated with Marianne's Trench is phenomenally interesting. I'm trying to figure out a way to get that map because it's so intriguing. People will put maps of the galaxies on their walls or maps of places they visited in the real world, pinpoints, perhaps of travel destinations

But I'm fascinated by the fact that James Cameron was one of a handful of people that has been down there and that's about it. And I'm so moved that the Micronesian group was able to bring a local down there. It's on every level. It's profound. And I'm going to read this article. Thank you so much
