Ashley

Hello, this is Ashley. I am talking a little bit quietly because I have a sleeping baby on my chest. My niece fell asleep on me right before I started this

Well, it started as filmmaking and acting in high school and always just loved comedy movies over dramatic movies. I would say so I always found humor and like the littlest things. So I started doing improv and sketch Groundlings all that stuff. And then eventually I was like, I should just be myself instead of being characters all the time. I love characters. But being yourself, I think, is definitely funnier because you could just pluck from your life experiences and make it your own individual kind of thing

@TheComedyCouch
Ashley, tell me how it feels to have to be the primary caregiver for your sister? S baby
@TheComedyCouch
Doug, what got you into comedy? What made you think? Hey, I want to get up on stage and tell jokes

Juna, I'm not gonna lie. It's hard. I love her to death. She's the cutest baby in the whole world. And like, right now she's asleep on my chest and it's so sweet, but it is exhausting and I am so tired and it's exhausting and I don't really get the rewards that parents get, which is weird. Yeah, but it's definitely something I never thought I would be doing right now

Good morning!

Like, at least with stand up, you get to write things down. And, Ashley, I love all of your comedy and how it kind of centers around, like, your family stuff and other wondering why you aren't single. And you said you're just sitting there holding your knees. Like why your sister hasn't baby before you and all that stuff. I love that kind of inspiration. I feel like other singleness is kind of my inspiration, too, especially in La

Never edit yourself. Chloe. Chloe, you're the coolest, and you're so tech savvy. What other kind of inside? See, I need to. I don't know if I can reschedule this. What kind of insights do you have about being a woman on Zoom
@TheComedyCouch
If any of you listeners out there have questions or comments about the comics two minutes, or just want to ask them something about how they got into comedy. Feel free to chime in

Isaac Chu

Hey, guys, it's me. Isaac Chu. I'm here to chat, talk about my personal life, and leave it. I don't know
2
@TheComedyCouch
Isaac, my question for you is how do you balance being a professional in the medical world and doing comedy? Does it ever cross your mind that you you have to, like, edit yourself or be careful so that people in your industry don't hear what you're talking about, or do you feel that you have the freedom on stage because they're not listening
@TheComedyCouch
Doug, you have your own podcast. Won't you tell us about it? And tell us how comedy plays into good podcasting
@TheComedyCouch
Ashley, what's it like having a cat that's more famous than you
@isaacchu
Isaac Chu
@isaacchu · 0:32
Yeah. That's an interesting question. Well, definitely. I think for me that the things that I won't talk about are patient stories. I think that's sort of the line where I understand that whatever happens in the hospital, people don't come there to have their personal information shared. So I think it's sort of important to sort of have boundaries that keeping in mind that your first job as a health care provider is to protect the patient as best you can

I don't really have the motivation to get up and put on makeup. That headshot that I have up right now is pretty deceiving. I look very different without makeup. And my male coworkers, I feel like they can just get up and throw some spit in their hair or whatever you guys do. That's probably not accurate, but they could just get up and turn their camera on, and they're like, Why is it your camera on?

Do you know what? It's actually really hard because I will never have the love and adoration that he gets from his fans and my parents because I'm not a cat. And I just have not been and as successful as he has also, what's hard is that he doesn't have to do anything. He just has to sit there and look angry and he gets everything I want. I actually have to work to get people to like me. I so it's just very unfair

But Isaac, Yeah, I'm curious about Leslie's question, because it sounds like your job is pretty professional, too. So how do you balance being yourself, like, especially on the Internet and social media and kind of like posting about your standup and then dealing with what happened to be professional at your corporate job. It can be a hard balance

General question for everyone!

Now what I'm wondering from you all, and I'm sure there's some different opinions here. Is what would you recommend that first step be? Is it take a class? Is it try out some of your jokes with family and friends. I want to try and encourage this person, but I don't want to scare them away or give them poor advice. So I would love to know
2
@TheComedyCouch
Most of the people you're going to hear on this show on two Dope minutes are people who have graduated from my class and who have been taught to really tell the truth. I have a motto when it comes to stand up, which is if anybody else can do your set, it's not your set, meaning be as unique and original as you possibly can

@TheComedyCouch
I see that Courtney Davis has joined our discussion. Not only is she a fantastic comedian, but she is also a teacher in The Fresh Faces course. With me, she sometimes goes a little blue. What do you guys think about that? Are you okay with The Dirty Comedy? Or would you rather her keeping clean? I'd love to know your thoughts

Advice for someone who wants to try stand up

So I'll just blurt stuff out and we'll just see how it goes, because I think that will deter your friend from going on stage ever again. And also right now, I think it's a great time to just be throwing out videos online, just talking to the camera, which can be also really scary. So I think if he can, he or she can just start doing that and knowing that it doesn't have to be perfect

But, yeah, you just have to be really careful just because whether you would like it or not, when you're in a position of responsibility like you are, it is true that if somebody who's working for you've some of your material and they feel they're judgmental about it, it's very hard for them to separate you there and you at work
@TheComedyCouch
I see that Jesse Biddle has joined our conversation. He's a professional athlete who decided he wanted to try his hand in comedy. I love it when people have specialties in other fields who find the humor and the storytelling in that field. Jessie, feel free to check Ryan and tell us a little bit about you
@TheComedyCouch

@CourtneyDavis you go blue...what do you like about letting it all hang out

Courtney, I had a question up there for you. Maybe you missed it. I'm going to learn how to act. Courtney Davis, on this thing

Advice

Hi, Taylor. Do you know what I think? Everybody is super different, but for me, personally, I just had to take the leap and do it. So what I did was I found a coach who I love and trusted, and she helped me build a set. And then the first time I ever did stand up in front of people like ever was at the comedy store. And it was terrifying

I feel like I kind of urge on some dirty jokes, too, but sometimes I have trouble when I go down that route and not making my whole set about that because I feel like sometimes some female comedians get caught in that and then they get critics because they're like, oh, that's all she has to talk about
@TheComedyCouch
Here? S a little hot tip when you want to start writing comedy throughout the day. If things make you giggle or if you notice things that are odd or bizarre, jot them down or make a note in a notebook and then return to them later to sort of flush it out
2
@TheComedyCouch

@ChloeDetrick is being hot funny???

Chloe, I know this is a throwback question, but do you think being a sexy hot lady affects your comedy? Do you feel like you have to sort of downplay your looks? Or do you sort of ride with it
2
@TheComedyCouch

@assholepodcast do dogs give feedback?

I have a question for Doug. Do you ever try out your new material on your dogs when you're walking them
@ChloeDetrick

Lesley you’re too good to me 😭

Leslie. Well, you're very generous to say I'm a sexy hot lady. I think all the females on this thread very much are, too. Sometimes I really like this comedian. Her name is Mary Beth Veron, and she's a little bit sarcastic stick. And I like to kind of incorporate that sarcasm into my comedy sometimes. But I think you have to walk a fine line because unfortunately, as females, we also have to be humble

Wondering if stand up and jokes about sex makes the relationship harder

And for, like, five years, I didn't let him come to my comedy shows so he wouldn't hear that because before I had let guys I was dating come to my shows and it completely made them run away. So I was like, oh, other guy is never going to marry a stand up comedian. They're going to see that I'm like talking about their size. And now I married someone who let me do that

Courtney. That's why I love watching your Instagram. And if you guys out there want to follow a fantastic Instagram, follow Courtney because she does the funniest videos with her husband and with her little redheaded baby, who I just want to put in my pocket and save for later, check out her Instagram Instagram. She's literally the Joan Rivers of our time
