Past or Present

Hello. My name is Mike. And my question, I guess just to get started on swell because I'm new here, would be do you think your past determines who you are today? Aid, in other words. Or maybe one perspective could be if you made mistakes in the past, can you overcome those mistakes in the future? And maybe a secondary question might be when or who determines that? Is it you? Is it the people in your family? Is it society?

A response to the question of is our present bound to our past. Personal agency and responsibility is discussed, as well as the concept of revision.

Right now one of my favorite quotes is by Alan Watts and it is we are under no obligation to the universe to be the same person we were five minutes ago. And I really have taken that to heart, especially in my own journey through addiction and recovery. Looking at my own past was particularly difficult in the beginning because there was a lot of resistance there's, a lot of shame and guilt. And it was always me. It was always me that was tying myself to the past

We have choice/power @the_1mic @jsmwang

We choose. We make mistakes. We listen to God. We don't listen. We listen to advice of people around us. We don't listen. We get to make all these choices, good or bad or other, despite all the information we may or may not have or choose to utilize. But I do believe to some degree, our lives have a purpose. And I believe that purpose is outlined by God or your higher power or whatever name you choose
