It is a very problematic institution that is extremely conservative, and from everything that I've studied and looked at, it's bigoted in its religious extremism. This is where education is right now in a country that likes to see itself as the greatest country in the world. But with Chicago currently dealing with its crime, particularly in the black and brown communities, a lot of discussion always turns into whenever we have these huge spurts of violence where we see kids acting out downtown vandalism, assaults, things

When I moved to the city I'm in now, I spent a lot of time, I said I'm not going to do any of that. And I spent a lot of time going to committee meetings for the local government and hearings and that sort of thing. And what I think we don't realize is a lot of people also don't vote in this country, but the power really starts locally. Even if you want to affect things nationally, you need to be plugged in locally

And so, if anything, I would say just some basic human rights that we have as citizens in our respective country, in our respective state, in our respective cities, and finding a way to make this information more accessible for people, for all socioeconomic backgrounds. And I get it. There's free legal aid resources, but they make you jump through so many hoops and resources. They make you jump through so many hoops and circles, I should say, to get to those resources
Like, stealing and destroying property is certainly not a new thing. And there are a lot of reasons for why people do it. And usually the people that do it, do it because they are living in a city where upward mobility is not very easily achievable, high poverty rates. Look at the French Revolution, right? There's a lot of reasons for that as well
And I agree 100% with Taylor with what you said about the idea of snatching the purse of the old lady on the street is not going to get you anything anymore. So it's the evolution of crime, and it absolutely is. There's also this push for at least in Chicago, to conceal and carry
I've seen underage girls approached by clearly men that were older or guys that were in their 20s against girls that are 15 and 16 years old. And a lot of these young men have fathers that are judges and aldermans and related to our political figures and our other business people. And no one discusses that because it's not necessarily something that can be framed in a problematic way on the news to frighten the public and make people feel uncomfortable because it's white collar crime, which is always different
Nothing prepares you for how unfair and how difficult the world is and what education is meant to do is not necessarily especially local education. I don't think what it's meant to do is give you all the answers to your questions, but it's at least putting you in a position to be rather prepared for answering those questions to the best of your ability. And hopefully you can move forward from there
I could imagine the powers that be, whoever you want to point to would be really concerned about that because they wouldn't have the same influence and power and control over people if more of that nuance and complexity was woven in. Right? Because if you talk about pulling up your bootstraps or the American dream or what have you, then you can nudge people, push people in the directions that you want them to go
