Should students refuse to go back to school? An Article by Gal Beckerman, published in The Atlantic

article image placeholderStudents Should Refuse to Go Back to School
And if this could be a nationally organized effort, one that really hits where it counts, I think that the conversation will start up in a meaningful way. I think that Gal's article, he's definitely speculating as a mine. But at this point, what else do we do? We got to do something. We know that we've been taken hostage by the lawmakers of this country and we're going to continue to be held hostage by them unless we do something, anything

Hey, Taylor, while I have very serious concerns about gun violence, I will say that self harm is not my preference, right? Not going to school is harming myself. It doesn't harm the public politics who are not making these decisions. I think the maximum power we have is in our vote

But then now it's being more of a thing where they're figuring out what to do, whether it be putting chairs in front of doors and allowing teachers to have guns, which is a very stupid thing to do, just things like that. It's like these politicians do not have any sympathy or heart for these parents, these victims, and now the future generation. It's like, are we going to wait until the next one to where we change the gun laws?

@sudha

Hey Sudha, thank you for the reply. I do totally understand where you are coming from, and I think that's the obvious response. For a lot of people, there is an aspect of self harm to to not going to school. It's going to affect your child, it's going to affect you and those around you. But I don't know, I haven't quite made my mind up on this either

Hey, Sierra, you bring up a lot of really good points, and it's interesting to hear you talk you're a little bit younger than me, but it's, it's interesting to hear you talk about your experience and then compare it with my own and then compare that with my cousins who are a little a bit older than me. So they're like 35, 36. And when they were in school, they did not have to deal with this

I know for a fact that I was reading some articles and some newspapers and they were saying something about that China call out the US throughout the year and that they need to have some sort of investigation going on because of their laws and they don't have anything regulated for people because it has come to their attention that they're not having the safety as they promised to have, which is really crazy to think about it because I read just news about shootings happening always in the US but never outside of other countries

Blaming parents for not noticing their child has violent tendancies?

And they had some psychologists on that was talking about all of the warning signs to look for in your children. And I thought that it was really interesting that their solution to this problem or one of their solutions to this problem was to say, oh, well, parents should be watching their children and studying their health to see if they are possible of committing such a terrible act

Yes! Amd we have 3 months to coordinate!

If we had the three months of the summer to organize this and make this walk out happen in September where no one's back at school until things change, I think it's brilliant. I think it's absolutely brilliant. It's not about people suffering and education lagging and us not using kids as pawns. This is about the power of the family unit doing something together to make a huge impact in this conversation and in people's understanding of who is at stake here

I think we should definitely refuse

And I really hope that next year something will happen nationally with all students in schools that we can really show that this should not be happening again

And I think that until legislation is made to protect these students, I don't think that they should be putting themselves in these dangerous situations. I feel like anywhere we go nowadays is very dangerous, but we're putting young children at Sudha risk because you know that there's a bunch of kids there. And I feel like that's oftentimes the target. So I think that one way to protest this and kind of stand your ground in a nonviolent way, obviously, is to not go to school

And so I think really engaging in anti bullying in schools and providing mental health resources for students, it's like a huge part of preventing gun violence. But anyways, that's a whole nother swell. So that being said, for me, it's like, I don't think that learning is, like, outweighing the cost of putting our children's lives at risk. If I was a parent, I would seriously consider home schooling

@kyliemiller

And if it means there's like a mass student walkout for any period of time, maybe that's just what parents and children have to do at this point to make a change. It's sad that the burden of this is coming on to studentlife and like whether or not they can go to school, it should never have come to this

Like you go to school to learn and become somebody and to make a change in this world. And if you're just going to school with a chance of being shot and killed, why would anyone want to? It doesn't make sense to me

30 years in Education

So many great insights. What a great conversation. I am a teacher. I am finishing my 30th year in education. I've taught 6th grade grade for a couple of years, fourth grade for a handful. And the majority of my time over the last 30 years has been in third grade. So everything that has been going on or being discussed or talked about in the news this last week is really hard because those are my kids. Those are the kids that I'm with

First Swell oops

So sorry about that. Just replying to my own post. Not sure what happened at the end didn't seem like it was recorded. I don't know if I accidentally hit the pause button while I was talking or the app. Just got tired heard of hearing my voice, but I just hope that the message was conveyed that what we need to do as a society is care about our kids first. Their social emotional needs need to be met

Because I think what happens with voting and yes, of course it's important to vote, but I think what happens is we then believe, naively, that because we're like, well, it's supposed to work this way, but we naively believe that these people that we put in office are going to do the right thing and that the system is going to serve them in doing the right thing. But it doesn't. The system serves money. We're seeing that right now
