AOC at the Met Gala

article image placeholderJameela Jamil 🌈 on Twitter
Last night at the Met Gala. As always, there were a number of appearances from celebrities who were dressed to the nines or dressed in a way to turn heads. And frankly, in the case of a lot of them, I think that the designers need to have their heads evaluated because we are really moving far away from what is considered clothing, and instead we're moving into, I don't know, just covering people with cloth that doesn't look good phase, I don't know

Right wing Twitter absolutely loves to bash on AOC no matter what. What do you make of the conversation surrounding her dress? https://s.swell.life/SS

And I guess, to her credit, she knew that she was going to something that really represented the 1%, and she wanted to be a presence that reminded people of her agenda and who she is. And we've seen that in all the reward shows, people stand up and talk about important issues and try to bring attention to things that aren't in the room. And for that, I really applaud her

One last thing I had thought about was looking at Billie Eilish and how she was trying out a new style or doing a huge paradigm shift from how she came onto the music scene. And one of the things they said in the article was that it was her mainstream debut, and I've got some thoughts in general about her transitioning into the mainstream, and it just kind of made me uncomfortable watching her in this arena for some reason

the red carpet as performance art

They're trying to be avant guard, trying to reframe how we talk and think about standards of beauty, standards of clothing, standards of artifacts. But I also think the Met Gala and the red carpet event is a performance art event, and I don't think it's no one ever intended it to be that way. But with all the media, all the attention, it's certainly a different thing than the purpose of the gala itself. Right?
