Last Week Tonight explores rent in the United States

article image placeholderRent: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
This week's episode was about rent focusing specifically on the way that renting is essentially crushing people left and right all over the country in favor of giving more power to the landlords and the mortgage companies, the housing companies that own most of the market share. As somebody who has definitely felt this, this coverage goes into significant detail about how landlords are manipulating things behind the scenes to their advantage left and right. There's an instance of one landlord who is essentially somebody who helps mortgage companies maintain their holdings

And I speak from this place because I have landlords who are such good people, and they've offered me long contracts because they know I care about the place, I care about their home. They don't want to be participating in the ecosystem that creates sort of a darkness in their souls. But they're good business people. They know that there's a balance. But it just really speaks to the crisis of the soul more than the crisis of the marketplace

Deb. What you said was so beautifully put, I could not possibly agree with you more. There was that clip in the video of that guy that was saying and he said it over and over and over again, and it was hard to watch. But if these people are too f****** stupid to learn their rights, well, then, oh, well, they have it coming

Dirty Money Netflix...Jared Kushner Season 2

There was a bill, the Airbnb bill that was addressed and the driving force behind that was that prices were just going out of control and people that wanted to rent were unable to do so because so many corporations were coming in buying properties and renting these out that there really wasn't any places to rent or buy or very fewer and it was just driving prices out of control to where it was unsustainable

I still think Citizens United has led us down this road

Corporations just having too much power and forcing everything into a black and white situation where there is no human element. It is just profitable and losses

Trying times

Hi, Taylor. I'm so glad you did this. Well, I currently don't live in the US and I live in Qatar. And my rent is the price of what's equivalent to three mortgages. Three. If all three of my mortgages were about $2,000 a month, I really can't complain because my job pays my mortgage, so I don't have to worry about it
