Why is Hollywood green lighting so many reboots and uncecessary sequels/prequels?

article image placeholderDiscussingFilm on Twitter
I mean, I got to imagine that millions of dollars went into making this film, and I kind of refuse to believe that that money couldn't have been spent on an original story. I think it just shows that there's, like a maybe fear or just blatant unwillingness to take risks and introduce new ideas into play. I don't know those people that really enjoy the Home Alone series, at least the ones that I know, and I'm including myself in that will likely not enjoy this

What a time to be alive. 😰

And when we get excited, when one show's getting rebooted or movies being rebooted, they're all coming down the pike. Everybody gets their turn to be rebooted. So I'm not surprised at all. In fact, I thought I remembered hearing murmurs about the possibility of them doing a home alone something. And I guess those are the thoughts that's confirmed. So Disney Plus is an interesting platform in terms of its future

Dark time for original film and TV

I completely agree with everyone on this thread. It's one of my absolute bugbears that every time someone seems to be excited about film, it's a sequel, it's a reboot. It's something made from something else. I feel like the closest we get to original television and film nowadays is stuff that is adapted from books, which are at least kind of somewhat original, but it's still feeding off of an audience that's already present

What reboots have you enjoyed? Any?

And if you watch the original King Kong, you just see how ridiculous that movie was with a claymation figure on top of an Empire State Building based versus what you can do from a technology standpoint. Now, I think that makes for a different movie. But I didn't really particularly enjoy any of the newer King Kong and Godzilla movies. I literally can't think of any, which leads me to believe that the answer to your question is what was obvious all along. It is money

@Phil

Phil, you really do bring up a good point. There are so many reboots, so many prequels and sequels that are being made. And for the most part, I think that a lot of people don't seem to enjoy what they're getting, although so there are a couple of examples that do stand out to me from recent years that I think are worth mentioning. One is Matt Reeves take on The Planet of the Apes
