Question of the Week, July 26th: What movie caught you completely off guard? My pick is the new Nic Cage film, "Pig"

article image placeholderUploaded by @Taylor
It made me think in ways that I really haven't been challenged to think about certain things by films in quite some time. I think a lot of the time when I was talking about this yesterday, after the film, I've gone to movies where I sort of just switch my brain off. There's films with two hour action sequences nowadays, and it's sort of easy to just sit and look. But this film was not like that. It made me think it made me feel

Tell me about a movie that you off your feet or made you eat your words. Films that surprise us are often the most enjoyable!

Tinkerbell and the Neverbeast :D

I'm not sure if it still is, but it was a movie that my sister, when she was little, wanted to watch with my mom and I. She had seen it before, like a bazillion times the way that kids watch movies over and over again. But my mom and I had not seen this film, and we started watching it thinking, oh, this will just be a fun Tinkerbell movie and whatever. And my mom and I were both wrecks. By the end of this film

Hey, Robin, your answer is so good. I will admit here and now that I have actually seen that movie and I really enjoyed myself. You know, this is one of those occasions when I think the that sometimes people get distracted by the fact that it's a kid's movie or that it's animated. Sometimes when done right, they really hit the Mark. And I think that that movie is a great example of when they're spot on

El Laberinto del Fauno ( Pan’s Labyrinth)

Hey, Taylor, this is a great question. I think that one movie that comes to mind that really knocked me out totally unexpected was Penn's Labyrinth, because because I knew Guillermo del Toro as like, this director of horror and fantasy films like Blade Two and Mimic and Hellboy. So it's like, oh, he's doing a drama set in Franco, Spain, and just in the first ten minutes knocked me off my feet. I was hooked

Willy’s Wonderland and Uncle Frank

The name of the movie was Willis Wonderland on Amazon Prime, and it was like, interesting and strange, and it was actually more entertaining than I thought it was going to be, because I can definitely commit to a terrible movie just because I just like to see it through that bothered me, like you said, just sort of turn off in a way, and it's just a great way to just zone out and relax. But this pig movie sounds like it'll be all kinds of feelings

But, man, I did not see that twist coming. And I thought it was absolutely brilliant. 100%. And I walked out of that theater blown away, man, what an unique, interesting idea for film and storytelling and takes you on a ride from the beginning to the end. And I urge everyone who has not seen us to go see it, rent it on one of the streaming services, find it wherever you need to find it. But, man, see that film?

Although I did really enjoy The Shape of Water, he has a way of creating a sort of ambience and doing world building that I think other directors struggle with. Even in a film like Hellboy, which I think is a good film. I don't think it's an amazing film. There is this massive scale to it that she really hits on. Well

Real Briggster great answer in Willy's Wonderland, a film that I recently watched. Actually, Neil, whose comment is right below yours, did a great post about it here on Swell. And that sort of prompted me to watch the film really unique to see the lead actor not really have many lines. I mean, we've seen that before, certainly in Mad Max, let's say. But Nicolas Cage, he's got a charm to him that I think is pretty undeniable

I felt like there were some questions that I had at the end, but maybe that was the intention again, not trying to say that that's a bad thing at all. It's funny, Jordan Peele, and I think it's a good thing. Honestly, he's one of those directors that's sort of emerging as somebody that really makes the audience question things, and it sort of leaves them with a very split opinion. I know a lot of people that love what he's doing

I personally enjoyed us thoroughly more because I thought it made you think a lot more it was more of a ride for me personally than get out. I like to get out, but I just don't think it was as amazing as people made it out to be. I think it was because it was centered so much on racial social commentary. But I think US is a far more brilliant film and twist, but that's just my opinion

And I love that they didn't do that. It is the first movie I've seen in the theater in quite a while that had a glimmer of that feeling of independent cinema that I miss so much. And I feel like I get to so rarely experience in the theater anymore unless I can go see an older film or a local film series or something, and whatever city I'm in, and it was just such a pleasure experience, a little bit of that in this movie
