What do you think of the Rolling Stones 200 Greatest Singers list?

article image placeholderThe 200 Greatest Singers of All Time
So let me know what you think. I think it's a little fun to scan through this and maybe have a few friendly arguments about things. At the end of the day, these are all, you know, musicians that have contributed such a great amount to our public discourse and just pop culture in general. So mad, mad, mad props to all of them

So I stumbled across this, and I know it's a couple of days later, but I just wanted to weigh in on it. And the first thing I noticed was this was really mainly pop artists, country artists, top 40, R and B, that kind of thing. And a lot of alternative, in my opinion, are missing. Great. You've got Kurt Cobain. I would argue his voice versus I thought his writing was better than his voice. You got John Lennon

I don't even have a top ten Greatest artist list. That seems so banal to me. It just takes away from the art, I guess. I'm on my soapbox here, but I just don't get the top list thing. I get it as like an algorithm. It looks really nice and you know what to expect

When I think of heavy metal and hard and rock, I mean, those are really the three guys that immediately pop into my head. And your point about songwriters versus singers, I think, is an important one. And Rolling Stone as an institution is known for kind of blurring the lines from time to time. Their opinions of artists have certainly changed over the years. I think the first Led Zeppelin album got pretty badly reviewed by them, if my memory serves me correctly

But as we're seeing from this swell and I mean, obviously people are going to have other reactions to this. But I feel like when lists are released for things, you usually get pretty negative reactions from people. Especially something like music that is so diverse and everybody interacts with it and consumes it in different ways and has different likes and dislikes to sort of conclusively, say as conclusively as a thing to be, but to say like, these are the best. It's just a strange thing

So you brought up a really good point here about what exactly is Rolling Stone's audience? And I think Rolling Stone lost its way, much like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which kills me because why don't they just rename it the Music Hall of Fame? There's rappers R and B, country, pop, rock in the it's just such a mishmash of things to call it the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I mean, I feel like Eddie Trunk
