article image placeholderNina Goswami
Nina Gaswami is the creative diversity lead at the BBC, which how cool is that? I am so excited to get to talk to you, Nina. So a little bit about Nina is that she spearheaded its initiatives, including the multiaward winning 50 50 Project, which supports the BBC's aspiration that is on air, representation reflects society. Such a cool project. I was checking it out earlier today. I've linked it here, so definitely check it out yourself as well

Let's talk advancing diverse representation in the news! #diversity #media #news #bbc https://www.bbc.com/5050

Diversity in news https://s.swell.life/SSRsUz3lqpD8wSn

Nina, your session at South By Southwest this year is let's, let's, let's, let's, let's talk Advancing diverse representation in to hear that around the world, only 24% of the of people seen, heard or read about in the news are women, and only 19% of subject matter experts source in the news are women. That's quite the statistic, as you can tell. I'm still sort of taking it in. I had no idea

The highs and lows of the news world

I love learning more about your career and just think it's so incredible that you have spent all of your career in the news world. And I'm wondering, looking back over the years, what has been one of the things you've absolutely loved the most about the work you have been able to do, and what is one of the biggest challenges that you either faced or are still currently is facing today in the world of news

Staying hopeful while doing the work

I'm wondering how over the course of your career you've kept perspective and still been able to take care of yourself and find hope and joy in the world while also still being aware and I'm sure covering and very much being involved with many more of the challenging and difficult stories that we see in the news every day. Thank you so much. I'm so looking forward to hearing your responses and continuing the conversation

@bowie Me, diversity and a bit about 50:50

Firstly, thank you so much for having me on. Yeah, those stats are something to get your head around, aren't they? But I think there's a real opportunity for change. But before I dive into that, you asked how I first got into journalism, and actually, it was when I was was eight years old. My dad had seen. Whereas Stewart, who is a TV broadcaster, black female TV broadcaster, one of the first in the BBC

@bowie challenges in news

So one of the things that we talk about is working together. How can we collaborate? How can we make something together? And so at the BBC, we have a central database of expert contributors. So we are always asking people to add themselves to that particular database, which you can find on BBC. Com. 50 50

@bowie new challenges and collaboration

The news has been, yeah, definitely relentless in recent times. So how do I keep perspective? I have to admit that it is hard sometimes, especially when it keeps going and going and going. And that's why having a good team around you is so important. Actually, I remember when there was a chemical attack in Syria, and I was the kind of senior producer working on that

@NinaGoswami what do you think is the best way to overcome news bias?

And one of the biggest sources of concern are the levels of polarization which you witness in the media. And it seems like corporate and political interests have aligned now more than ever, and it's getting harder to read between the lines or gauge what's factual anymore. So in this regard, I have a couple of questions for you. Firstly, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the ongoing situation itself, particularly keeping the recent past in mind in India

@Karan.Dev democracy & truth. Good to be in conversation. Thank you.

Hi, Karen. Thank you for your questions and thoughts. Yeah. I think the situation in India is one to be closely watched, as you say. I mean, we're seeing quite a few of the kind of global indexes downgrade India in terms of kind of different Democratic factors. And I was looking at some of the BBC's recent reporting, and we've cited US based nonprofit Freedom House and their annual report on global political rights and liberties
