Why Is Doomscrolling So Addictive?

article image placeholderUploaded by @FryedOreo
What has been the recent fascination phenomena with doom scrolling? I personally don't get it. It's just not something I find appealing interest when I go online. But yeah, like some people, it's a fetish to look at this bad news, to look at these awful things that are going on in the world and it's warranted. No one likes to hear about bad things that happen, but it definitely is a favorite pastime for some

Should People Be Able To Make Money Off Of Doom?

Okay, first, thank you. I heard this term only recently in passing and then forgot to look it up. So thank you for explaining what this is. I don't understand the fascination but I could imagine that it's going kind of like the train wreck that's happening that people can't look away from that. Maybe doom scrolling is like that. I've heard people describe some things like this as in a reminder that their lives are not that bad by comparison

@SeekingPlumb where doom looms curiosity blooms.

Oh my God, I had a car just like that. It failed on me before. Hopefully that happened to them. And then the other person is thinking, oh, I got in a car accident last month. So this is annoying to me. They still have not got back to me on the damages and estimation. So it's so many different avenues of thought one can glean from seeing a tragic event. Not everybody responds to it in the same way

Yeah, I get why they do it, but it's also funny that it's easy to slip into or sort of create. I mean, we're creating it every time we view something, and we don't even realize we're creating our environment. That kind of, like, makes me think of it's creating not a metaverse per se, according to the terminology today, but we're creating our own sort of bubble. That's powerful and disturbing when I think about it that way

So I would say probably in the next five to ten years, there'll be a sophisticated profile on all of us to which it will begin to prey on our Insecurities and it will boost our egos in ways we don't think it's doing. But we will find ourselves magically shopping for these items that we would have never gave a thought about before. And doom scrolling is an interesting concept and once you start, it's hard to stop. It is hard to stop seeing the nastiness of society

The Paramount one is so I haven't got to see the more recent seasons, but I'm dying to. And you're right. I absolutely loved it because it wasn't for religion. It wasn't against religion. It was all of these other things. And I loved your description of a gumbo pot of all of these things. Love it. Must get more evil

@SeekingPlumb what’s your go-to?

But I can see why. Because the digital footprint on Google is immense. Especially if you use YouTube, which is owned by Google. It's almost just this vice trap if you're not careful. I feel that I'm careful enough that I only see the stuff that I want to and the stuff that I don't intend on seeing. I guess it can happen every now and then. So what's an alternative? Do you use Bing instead for your search needs? Yahoo

Just add to our back and forth on algorithms. The reason I switched was I read a book several years ago now I can't remember what it was called. I can remember the cover and what it looked like, but essentially there was piece in there that talked about how two friends in the same geographical area were using Google and they could both punch in the exact same keywords to get completely different results

@FryedOreo @SeekingPlumb: in a word, "Conditioning"…

And have those things made their way to audio platforms like Anchor and Swell Cast and things like that? I would argue yes. They're just not as easily detected because the actual platform highlights a different type of parasocial interaction. So over time, the algorithms will be catered and tinkered to identifying pockets of people, niche groups where marketeers may be interested in sort of selling you up the river. But that's my two cent man. It was a really good post

@lwatsonjr good points raised 🤝

And I think one of the ways that they're doing it behind the scenes is with the algorithms. And so with doom scrolling, it's sort of a recent phenomenon and I think a lot of the boomers probably are just unaware of this thing that's feeding them constant news stories of all this tragic stuff that's going on across the nation. My mom, she'll share stuff. Something in Dallas happened

@FryedOreo: Black Mirror, ep. 1…

But it was just one of those things where it's like how far will people go to capitalize on this sort of nuance that you've described it's doom scrolling or this really dramatic like. I think about the overlay that Facebook had initiated a couple of years ago. Where they have it now even on Instagram. Where if it's sensitive content. They will do an overlay with a warning. What you're about to see is sensitive content based upon the community guidelines

You know what, man? I think it's curiosity. I think we love being horrified, grossed out, entertained. You know, I can remember the first time I venture into the doom scrolling world and it was actually my stepdad's son. When he came to visit, he took over the computer. It was like, I got something to show you all. It's just, man, you're going to be freaked out. I was a little nervous

@OmegaStrange Rotten was wild!

It's like cable, but it's for anything you could think of. That's the evolution we're in. We are in the evolutional period now of television or programming. To which back then the complaint was we had over 1000 channels, but there was nothing to watch. It was more of the same. But now we have fewer places to watch things. But these fewer places provide everything imaginable to watch. I can type up dog pooping and there will be videos of dogs pooping

Yeah, man, they got rid of that like ten years ago. Yeah, the last time I was on it, I remember, I remember it was really watered down compared to the first time I was on it. It was probably about 15 years ago last time I was on the website. And yeah, I think most of it were like articles about the events
