Fair and handsome? Really???

article image placeholderUploaded by @Bendi_G
That makes no difference to me whether it's light, whether it's dark, whether it's any shade in between. That doesn't make you handsome or beautiful or not. Every shade can be beautiful. Every shade is beautiful. You don't need to be any lighter or any darker than what you are because you're beautiful and handsome as you are. And I'm actually just talking from a two dimensional perspective

Does ‘Fair and Handsome’ reinforce the racist notion of superiority that fairer is somehow better? Should we tolerate such marketing in India still?

And even if the government goes ahead and bans these products, I believe it's going to become like drugs, where although it's illegal, people find a way to buy it and people want it because it's helping them. It's helping them become lighter in skin, become fairer so that people then can look upon them with respect and people can think that if you have a white, you have a white skin and you're doing pretty much good in life, so it's a parochial mindset

And yet several people here in India use that word to describe the people from Nigeria. I feel very sorry for them. And as you said, people in India look at being called African is a terrible thing because it's a poor continent. Well, okay, India may be more developed now than it was. And there may be a rising, growing wealthy class, but there's still a huge chunk of the population, over half the population who live in abject poverty here in India

But if you take 10% out of 1.4 billion, that's 140,000,000 people. That's a lot of people, right? Most countries don't even have so many people living there. Some 40 million people actually came out of poverty. In fact, out of 140,000,000 people, probably, I would assume 1% of the people were already wealthy prior to 1990s or 1990s. And in fact, the other 9% are the ones who came out of poverty in the recent years

Yeah, I mean, you said the whole color thing. Wanting to be paler is a thing across the whole of Southeast Asia, but it's also something in any most countries where people have a darker complexion. Even in Africa, bleaching of the skin is a very popular thing to do. In England, where we have a large black population, Caribbean and African, they talk about people with fairer skin, like somebody who's got lighter chocolatey skin is deemed as a more attractive look in some way

But again, it's really surprising to hear this also with regards to people being angry on white people in India, I think somehow people have forgotten that, right? If you consider the whole Southeast Asian region, in fact, the Middle Eastern region as well, all of these countries were occupied by colonial powers

And I'm absolutely sure many of them are very happy with their skin color. But there is also, just like in India, there is also this myth, this idea, this perception that the lighter the skin, the better you are. And again, it's probably also linked to colonial days. I mean, for example, in Africa, in Rwanda, you had, of course, in 1994, the genocide by the Hutus against the Tutsis. Why?

So well captured. You know, in Fact, the Media needs to make your Take on this so viral right now. Benedict. You captured the essence so well. The grass is greener on the Other side. I've seen a lot of fair skinned people trying to get a tan and dark skinned people running away from the sun. I'm just laughing my a** off. And when I was looking, listening to your whole concept. Yes, it is so true. Thank you

It'll take a lot of time before we change and before we're immature. So there you go. That's my simple answer. Thanks for bringing it up, Benedict. Thanks. Bye

Hello, Avi. And thank you again for your response. It was interesting hearing you. I detected in some of your other responses, I think he's lived in North America before, and then you reveal that you'd lived in Canada. So I was like, yes, I've also lived in Canada for a little bit. I was just curious to know whereabouts you lived. Loved living there. I think Canada is a fantastic country, and now I live in India

And this was Christmas Eve and we finally managed to find one little tiny place that was serving hot dogs and very ordinary hot dogs, but we were so hungry we just laughed them up anyway. So that's about Canada. You're absolutely right. Look, Indians are very wary of strangers and in your case they probably stay away from you because not many Indians are comfortable in English

Hi again. Avi. Yes, indeed. In houndslow. Not only just Indians, but more specifically in Houndslates. Well, sorry, Southhall, which I think is not far from Hounds, late. It's all near the South Wales in Ealing, and you go further west. Cotton Hanslow, of course, but it's particularly in that area. It's a lot of Punjabis, particularly in South Punjabis, so even more specific groups

And I used to on a daily basis, I used to eat tacos or burritos or hot dogs. I don't think I ever had Indian food. I only had Indian food. But I was with my uncle. It's such a small world because you talked about Mississauga. My uncle was living in Mississauga, which is just a little distance away from Toronto downtown. So my uncle was living in Mississauga and I think I only had Indian food when I visited him

People need more exposure to be friendly, to be open, and not fall for nonsense like Fair and Lovely. To your original point. All right, Betty. Take care. And if you're wondering what am I doing up in the middle of the night, my two dogs I have three dogs, two of my dogs got in the fight. One poor guy started bleeding from his lips, so I had to rush into the wet. Just come back. Chand heard you have reply, so yeah
