What is this hashtag? Where are my people?

article image placeholderUploaded by @Tim
So for the past several years, I've been doing some deconstruction of the selfie on Instagram by posting pictures of myself with my face hidden behind a mask. And for this past else reason, I didn't actually make a mask. I just cut out a picture of a chimpanzee and took a selfie with the chimpanzees face where mine was. It's not Photoshop. I'm just holding up a picture in front of my face, and I'm wondering, why don't people do more of this?

I’m looking for others but I don’t know the word I need #instagram #selfie #falseface #hashtag

#metaselfie???

I don't know if this exactly works, but I'll throw it out. You can see everything I would say it's a meta selfie, because what I observe in the selfies that you post, there's a playfulness, there's an imagination, there's some creativity right there's these facets of who you are. So the self. But it's sort of meta because it's not exactly your face. You're offering us selfie on another level, if you will. I don't know

Meta selfie definitely gets towards what I'm going for. And when I search on the actual hashtag meta selfie, it's a lot of photos of selfies in which you can see someone taking a selfie, so they're not actually selfies. They are portraits of people taking selfies or selfie with an iphone in it so that you can see that you're looking at a person who's also posing with their own self portrait, which I get. That makes sense for the metadata hashtag

Apologies, #falsefacesociety, & good luck. @Tim

Okay, this is going to sound really silly and kind of stupid, but when you made the request, I wasn't thinking that you were looking for a functioning hashtag, ie one that is used by a group of people. I was thinking you were paving new roads, new frontier, so to speak, coming up with your own hashtag. So don't mind me apologies that my hashtag was very unhelpful. I did do some poking around and yeah, nothing quite fit

So I'm interested to hear more. And then also the why is it just to block out your face? Is it so no one knows who you are or is it an expression of a statement you're trying to make by the mask or by the face that you're putting on? I'm very curious, so I'd like to hear more

from #maskmonday to #maskmaker to #masked

I really conceptually could not understand the idea of a selfie. And as it became normalized, I realized the portraits that we're putting of ourselves online are highly curated. They're not real life. It's not a documentary function. It is a projection function of this is my ideal life, my ideal self. It is, in fact, a type of mask. It's a performative expression of self

I just want to compliment you on this idea. This concept is awesome, and it's also cool because you're probably confusing the CIA and the FBI and all the other Alphabet Alphabet gangs out there. They're all like, what the heck? Who is this? We must find who's behind the mask. Can you imagine? They're, like, analyzing all your masks and thinking about and trying to figure out what's the thinking behind this thinking
