The value of both certainty & uncertainty.

article image placeholderDeviate: The Science of Seeing Differently
Okay, this is almost something where you can thrive in it, this type of world. But for those who seek for certainty, where does that leave them? A little further down the page, Lotto writes, the biological motivation of many of our social and cultural habits and reflexes, including religion and politics and even hate and racism, is to diminish uncertainty through imposed rules and rigid environments, or in one's vain attempt to disconnect from a world that lives only because it is connected and in movement

If we're reaching a tipping point, without reversing progress, how do we create an equilibrium?

I am certain that this is yet another one of your very insightful thought provoking. Swells. I'm definitely certain of it

Speed of progress & ability to adapt. πŸ€” @MerelyHuman

It can be a little bit of a change again and again and again. But if it begins to happen rapidly or long term, there can become a tipping point emotionally, right where someone there could be the mind breaking down the way you mentioned. But there could also be this desire to force things to be different and that I think could present itself in different ways
@SeekingPlumb

Logical or rational certainty vs the illusion of it. @MerelyHuman

And that's just one example, because there are other times when someone is very certain about something where it's more about the illusion of certainty than it is a matter of faith or logic or evidence, et cetera. I don't know that illusion plays such a big role in the other side. You know, where people gravitate towards uncertainty because by the very nature of it, there's no, it's not definitive right

Even what we think is certain has many assumptions attached. @MerelyHuman

I believe I mentioned this in another swell about the comparison of if we were told to visualize an Apple, some will have no color and it will be 2D, and some will have color still to be all the way to the extent of having it fully formed in color and detail and dimension

Thank you. πŸ˜„ @MerelyHuman

Well, thank you for joining me down this rabbit hole. And thank you ceiling for me too

In a way we could look at this graph as being not only these spots of inventions or advancements that have come to facilitate communication and connectedness, but we can also point to other advancements that have come as a result of the connectedness. And as we see this beginning to get steeper and steeper, I do think that at this point we still sort of have an equilibrium of some kind, but I think it's getting sketchy

I don't know how that works either, but together somehow or another. I got there. I think it's another reason why I like these types of conversations. You know, because your mind can either be shifted by someone saying something directly or it can happen through the process of it all. And it's interesting to see what's going to happen from point A to point B and beyond. It's always an interesting journey. Anyway. Thank you for the conversation
