How do YOU add 7 + 6?

article image placeholderThe unique ways in which we think.
But this other person, if I gave it to them in a group of three because it's not two and it's not four, they can't remember any of them. If I give them two, they're fine if I give them four. They're fine. It's really strange, but I'm curious. Do you know of any other ways that our brains possibly operate differently from each other? Sometimes I think we are not even aware until we start talking about these things

Our brains are so unique in how they process information, yet we believe some of these processes are just "standard." But are they?

@SeekingPlumb I map things

When someone tells me to go shopping and get certain things, I think of the aisles I'm meant to go down. I'm a bit of a power shopper. We can do scan and shop with a wand and never have to go to a cashier. We just wand the stuff, tap the wand into a receptacle, tap the contactless credit card and we're out so I can do 20 to 30 Euro shopping stuff within seven minutes in a large shopping mall where we normally buy our things

So cool! @topgold

And so when I think I've forgotten something or I want something different that I haven't had in a while, then I visualize one of the stores that I've shopped in many times and go down the different aisles, see if there's anything that sticks out. I'd be like, oh, yeah, that's what I forgot or, oh, yeah, that would be nice to have this time around, but it's not quite as flexible as yours is

Weird ways to organize the info

And that's not to say that he's not capable of following a list. That's just saying that we think very differently. And I think it's so interesting. Ideally, it's the same information, but how we get to the same information is different. And that's so interesting. And then it begs the question, okay, so then why do we have all of these standardized tests? Okay, if we each process information differently, some of us are visual

Ticking boxes. @Izzy

And like you said, not everyone does well with tests, either, because we learn differently, processed differently, and then even the output is different. So this may be a bit more food for thought and a bit to chew on. Honestly, because it has been for me over the past few months that meme that I was describing. The seven plus six person was described as normal, quote, unquote

But if we actually catered to the students, as opposed to some standardized idea, you know, then how much more creative, expansive could their thinking be? How much more could they accomplish? What kind of a society would it be now? Okay. This is a tangent squirrel. Anyway, I read this article today about some mysterious doctorscientist who has developed a whole bunch of wild, scifi sounding things, and apparently there are patents. They're not necessarily fully developed yet

I had so much passion, so much enthusiasm. And my mom saw that in me. And she was like, this girl is going to get worn down in school, and she's not going to have all this pent up energy with nowhere to put it. So because my mom saw that and put me in homeschooling, and I was able to really invest my childhood self into all these activities and hobbies. I was able to learn and grow so much

And it wasn't until I got to College that I was in so many situations that weren't supportive of that that I realized that there was something different about me than neurotypical people, and that's when they're like, oh, you have borderline ADHD. It's kind of ADHD, but not enough to really give you a diagnosis

@Izzy

But at the same time, I can be sitting in the living room and hearing the tiny soap bubbles in the dishwater in the kitchen popping. I can hear that from the living room. I don't know how it works and what's going on in the brain that I have difficulty processing some things and not other things. But, yeah, the brain is strange

It's like distracting in the sense. It's like if there's a candle lit in the room and someone's trying to have a conversation with me and I smell the candle, I won't be able to focus on what the person is saying to me because I'm so overwhelmed by the scent of the candle. It's interesting because I don't have that great of hearing, but I have similar experiences to what you named with Michael sense of smell, which is so interesting. Yeah
@SeekingPlumb

Yes! ADHD & HSP. @Izzy

This journey has been an interesting one. Several years ago, I had a friend who was a licensed therapist, and she told me she thought that I was a highly sensitive person. The term was new to me. I'd never heard of it before, but it fit because all of my senses are heightened and the away that we're talking about. So I was like, wow, and it rocked my world. Suddenly, things made sense

And then just riding that wave and realized that a lot of people went through some craziness or are going through some craziness not knowing that they're dyslexic so working on a project, but it's always interesting to find out from other people how they think and how they get to conclusions. And I'm still working it out for myself, but definitely up for hearing. Have a good one

Tx for the convo starter. First time on this platform - kinda cool:-)

And it's good to have a word for it. It doesn't have to be life changing, but it's nice to make sense of things that are sometimes pretty convoluted. So

@SeekingPlumb

Welcome, @Claude_K!

Not all mental illnesses or disorders or whatever word one wants to use, but it's almost like hand in hand. Let's say, with ADHD, there are times when boom, boom, boom, all of these ideas can come together, and it's like almost slipped. It's amazing. But then there are other times where it's like, I can't keep a thought in my head to save my life. And it's squirrel here. Oh, and squirrel there
