The power of storytelling: women shaving & Liquid Death.

article image placeholderThe Sneaky, Manipulative History Of Why Women Started Shaving
The power of storytelling. Women. Have you ever asked why we teach young girls to start shaving? Why society thinks it's quote, unquote, right, or appropriate that we do this? Men, have you ever wondered why you think of women who don't shave as disgusting and women who do shave as womanly or any of these other phrases or ideas that society has that we individually have about a woman shaving? It's all tied into a marketing job done around 100 years ago

And nothing is more meaningful than what many people think or believe. And many people believe or think a certain thing. It can sometimes form into a patriarchy and hemony. And a lot of that stuff you were describing to me reinforced it because it reinforces profits. So the Gillette, they make a lot more money selling shavers to not just men, but now women. Whereas women at one point in time, what do I need this silly razor for?

@FryedOreo

I haven't seen many eyes, or at least I haven't been paying attention, because I had no idea that Gillette is now talking about toxic masculinity. I think it would be so entertaining to see them challenged on their role in specifically starting women shaving. Of course, it would never go over because Gillette doesn't want to lose that customer base, and that's huge. But, man, can you just imagine how entertaining would that be?

And I've always wondered why stories work so well. Stories are a great way to teach people things. Stories are a great way to teach kids ideas and life lessons and personal experiences. You could vividly describe all these things through the narrative, but it always fascinates me. And I've always wondered, why do we love to connect the dots and go on a journey with storyteller? What do you think? All right, bye

Avi? Great question. And I think stories universally connect us. But it's the good stories, right? So if I had a story about how how I wanted to eat a hot dog with toothpaste, it wouldn't really be a great story. It is a story. I can have a plot of it that I've always wanted to eat unhealthy and also brush my teeth. And then somehow I connected this to mean something

And you need a plot, as in a sequence of and show plot points. And at the end of it all, the self concept is that much more enriched because of an insight, because of an idea or because of a belief. An insight idea or belief, and your brand aligns with that insight idea or belief or those are values that your brand upholds or respects. And so, please buy my brand. That's what I understand about storytelling and advertising and marketing. Chand branding, but why?

Storytelling is so fascinating and why we're interested in it. I mean, I think there's so many different reasons, right? I listened to a smile this morning that was talking about learning, and the gentleman mentioned that maybe instead of these separate, different learning styles, that was all about experience. And then I was thinking that this seems like it's also largely about story, not only the literal experience of things, but the figurative as well

I continued to do so because I got tired of just having the hair under there. But when I see women with hair under their arms, I'm like, oh, my gosh, that looks so authentic and so rich and so real and so powerful. And then I've continued to do it. I continued to wax. I continue to wax. I continue to wax. But I can't honestly say if there was well, actually, no, the reason why I continued to wax other areas

Diversity in stories can democratise the power of storytelling

Hi, Christina. I found this, well, very interesting because you and I come from very different cultures, from different ends of the world, and yet a lot of what you said rings true here as well. So the way I see it is that people are and society, including you and me, possibly can't help but get influenced by the opinions of people around us. So, for instance, communities and societies, they are intrinsically hierarchical, right?
@SeekingPlumb

@shortswithsapna

Welcome to slow. I think you made some really great points. You know, that we can't help but be influenced by the opinions around us and the diverse voices give us more options. And you know, I sometimes imagine the thing possibly that hierarchies don't have to to be at least in all of the places that they do exist. But I think maybe that's sometimes an idealized view. But since we cannot escape them, I think you are completely right
