"Light makes shadow. Truth makes lies." Are these true?

article image placeholderLight makes shadow. Truth makes lies.
Light, light, light, light. Light makes shadow. Truth makes lies from a book of fiction I'm currently reading. The first portion I can get behind Light needs an object between the source of light and something else in order to create that shadow. But I can still get behind light. Light makes shadow. Truth makes lies. To me. It's the second portion that I'm running in circles over. Does truth make lies intrinsically? They are linked. There's no avoiding it

The 2nd portion has me running in circles. (From Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson.)

Blind to our shadows and prideful in our truths.

But there's really nobody here to tell us that it is a lie, no higher power to do that, at least not within our foreseeable naked eye or measurements that we have as people. So those are my thoughts on those two statements and how I feel they're in unison, because there's like a certain duality to everything in life. Nothing is absolute uncertain except death. But even then, we don't really know what death is like because we haven't experienced it yet
@SeekingPlumb

Where do we begin, if truth... When is something a lie? @Wuandurful

I've never thought that about someone either. These are sort of drastic examples, but I think there is some truth to what he said, though, and I think sometimes that is the case. But I don't think it's always the case. You brought up something else that as we learn more information about things at some point early on, then a claim we might make is inaccurate, even though we think it's the truth. But then I would say, Is that really a lie?

Shadows and truths. Compelling. Lol @SeekingPlumb

So let's say you might not want to kill like a murderer. Right. But if you look at yourself, maybe from a motivation of the killer, right. Like what motivated him to do these things, we'll be scared to find that sometimes the things that the struggle they were going with, but they were going through what we go through as people. And I'm paraphrasing Carl Young here. So it's not like I'm speaking him verbatim

Idioms of wonder. @MerelyHuman and @SeekingPlumb

So I guess that's where I was coming from with that particular statement. I was connecting it to experiences that I have encountered and that I've went through where those things can be true. So that's where I was coming from. But I guess you were trying to separate yourself from it. And I think also, what's interesting is this can bring into different plays of how we interpret information, how our personalities interpret information differently
@SeekingPlumb

Thank you. @MerelyHuman

And while I had seen that the author had completely disregarded simple things like physics and things like that when addressing another aspect of the story, I was wondering whether they had or had not really thought through that particular statement that they wrote out. So I thought, Well, if they struggle with physics, maybe they're better in this area, but because I was struggling with it for whatever reason, I couldn't quite nail it down. But you're you have done that very nicely. Thank you
@SeekingPlumb

Jung's theory. @Wuandurful

So this blanket idea is something I'm not ready to fully embrace? I think there is some truth to Young's theory, but I feel like there are so many other factors to consider moral codes, how they developed, how they morph over time, why they change to say that it's strictly that way seems a bit reductive to me. But who am? I don't know

Yes, shadow. It's just the definition. And similarly, there can be. I think what the author is saying is there can be no lies without there being a truth. It's truth that makes lies because otherwise it's just a statement. But once you know that this is the truth, the sun is round. Then you know, the statement that the sun is rectangular, to be a lie, to be false. So unless there is an establishment of truth, there is no lie

@MerelyHuman

There is no need in physics that if light causes shadows and shadows must cause light. Also, I am going by the literal definition of the words. So if you look up a dictionary for shadow, shadow is dark space or created by a body coming in between light and the surface, a dark area that is created by something coming in between light and the surface. So you need light to make a shadow. And similarly, a light is defined as a falsehood or something that is false
@SeekingPlumb

The whirlwind of thought. @sudha

Thanks for responding, Suda. Your take on it is where I started. And then I think I got wrapped up in a bit of overthinking or something. And I got stuck and I was like, okay, well, am I overthinking this? Am I not? Am missing something? Am I not? And round and round, I went, I think I have a tendency of asking the question, is this really true?
@SeekingPlumb

Malleable perceptions. Predisposed towards truth. @Joylove

But unfortunately, we don't have that option, partly because wherever we live, we're not going to have access to all of them, and partly because I suspect that they don't want to give out that information because then everybody will choose whatever they want, and it could cause problems whether or not being enough vaccine or gluts in other areas, depending on which vaccine becomes the most popular. I think you sort of touched on this when you talked about the importance of making snap decisions
@SeekingPlumb

The journey. πŸ™πŸ» @merelyhuman @Wuandurful @Joylove @sudha

So this being is attached to a person. And this being is teaching the person that if you can wrap your head around the existence of truth and the existence of lies, you can shape, you can form a new reality essentially. And this being an illusion. And so she ends up being able to do that a little later. But, yeah, there's so much wrapped up in that
