Swell Roundtable: College in Covid WTF?

Hey, welcome to another Swell Spotlight. This is an unusual one. It's about what families are going through right now because some schools are starting. Some schools are not, but we're focusing on people going to College. Young people are they going to stay at home? Are they going to live by where their colleges are? They they're going to Zoom in every day. I chose a family who is in the middle of all this right now

What are Sander, Quinten, and Isaac doing ? How to plan when you can’t plan #college #covid #decisions

Hardships of being a senior during COVID-19

So I will be doing online classes through Zoomcalls Monday through Friday, which is a real bummer for me because I won't get the first year on campus experience that so many get to enjoy

Past 6 months

So for me and my family, the past six months has been a real roller coaster ride. I mean, when COVID, for when we first started hearing about COVID, it was, you know, such a joke. And, like, there are memes everywhere. No one really took it seriously. But then as death, the test toll started getting higher, and it was a real threat. And then our school finally sent us all home in March

So I'm kind of just been fortunate that I have generous people in my life that have made Corona not too intrusive for me, and also lucky that I'm going to my third year, my College education. So I'm not like my brothers who are having their first year disrupted in the manner that a lot of incoming freshmen are

Random worry?

I have to ask now that you have gotten through those six months of like, COVID COVID. And now you're entering into whatever you've chosen to do. What's the like. Do you have a worry about what's gonna go down because of these weird circumstances? And if so, what is that worry? Just like a random worry. I'd love to know

I guess I have a few worries getting back into Canada, crossing the border, I don't know, making sure I have all my paperwork in order to make sure that goes smoothly. Somehow, my girlfriend is spending her night next year abroad in Scotland. So worry is I promise her that I would visit her. So hopefully I'll be able to find a way to make that happen. But that will also be challenging. And I guess just worried that I'm going to get back into Montreal

My random worry

So a random worry I have is that because my first year of College is going to be online. I hope that my original idea of what College should be like isn't too tainted because I'm not going to be able to meet with any of my professors in person as well as my classmates. So even though it's completely online, I hope that it's still a good learning environment

My biggest worry during the pandemic

There have been nights where I wish I could go hang out with friends who are being careless, but have decided decided to stay home in order to protect my stepfather, who has provided for our family in numerous ways. So, yeah, that's my biggest worry

Decision process for parents ...

Hey guys, thanks so much for sharing those experiences, those feelings. It's a great window into the circumstances and how you guys are doing. So thanks. And I'm sure we'll get some more stories in this swell from other other people. Elana and David, from the perspective of being parents, how has it been to watch this unfold, and how far or close did you stand in the decision making process? Because it must be its own cycle of events

Dealing

But here we are. And we're happily situated as a family in California. We are still social distancing and wearing our masks. And the boys will do their classes online. And, you know, Knockwood. This pandemic gets under control at some point soon so that these boys can see some semblance of normal

And I think it takes sense of, like, humor and imagination and flexibility and support and all the things that make us work together as a community. So I'm looking forward to more stories
