He beat New Mexico State team that didn't play last year, and this was expected. So we'll take him off for now, but he's not too far away from it now. Yukon didn't play last year either. Randy Edzel, this is the second time with Yukon. He took UConn to its glory days of Big East Champions, Fiesta Bowl. He really built this program. It's not looking like he's got that magic touch again
Mitchell Ross
@mitchyro99 · 0:59
And the thing where they said they were practicing with Covet last year, I'll be honest with you, it didn't look like they were practicing much based on how they played against Illinois. And if this season is going to turn around his turn around in the next coming weeks, or Scott Frost is going to be gone
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 1:38
But the reason I made this comparison wasn't necessarily to say that Frost or Harbor should or shouldn't be fired. But the reality is they have a much larger price to pay than the dollars and cents, and that's saying that they found their guy, they got their hometown hero and that they were wrong. And the wins and losses categories between Nebraska and Michigan over the past several years are where the comparisons end. But the story is still the same
phil spade
@Phil · 2:43
Nebraska just doesn't have a big enough recruiting bed to get players, especially the skill position players they've always had to go out of state to recruit. And it doesn't take too many years of being irrelevant or being 500 for that luster to really come off. And I say that from experience because I went to Indiana University and that used to be a basketball school. However, they have not been nationally relevant for years. Which kind of brings me to a point of coaches and how this happens
phil spade
@Phil · 4:52
Well, even though it's just week one, we have our first coaching casualty of the season. Randy ads all out at UConn, and this is no surprise. We put him on the hot seat after week zero after Bad lost Fresno State. He comes back, loses to Holy Cross. And today they announced that both Yukon and Randy Etzel mutually agreed to part ways and we thought something like this would happen
Mitchell Ross
@mitchyro99 · 0:50
So it makes it a little better. But that team was so talented that they didn't need to develop players. And if you look at Ojaran staff, they're not really good at developing the players because right now they can recruit. But it's all with coaching right now. And if they can't turn around, I see an exit with Ojouran in the coming year
phil spade
@Phil · 1:47
Unfortunately, I like him. I really do. I think he's great for College football, but I just don't think the expectations are going to be met with LSU. Louisville also has an easy game ahead of them. However, as I mentioned, Eastern Kentucky comes into town, and as I mentioned, the city of Louisville has always really supported the program. And if they don't get a good crowd in there on Saturday, that's going to be significant
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 4:21
So for the UCLA game, I know that Phil was bullish on UCLA to begin with and bearish on LSU to begin with. So in reality, was it a bad loss? Is it going to look like a bad loss at the end of the year? Lsu spent the entire game week in Houston because of the Hurricane. That was a challenge. It was their first game. Ucla had a tune up game. They had two first time coordinators calling the game
phil spade
@Phil · 1:47
Tony, it's a fair call out, and I actually agree with you. I think it might be a little premature to put him on the hot seat, especially after we even discussed that UCLA would win this game. And it's not a bad loss. Except for those that have the ultra high expectations at LSU
phil spade
@Phil · 4:16
But if he struggles with any of these with Washington State, Oregon State or Colorado, then he will be turned up even more so these are must win games for him, or else he could be finding himself out pretty quickly. But I do think he'll have to the end of the year, but he's got to pull another rabbit, yet another rabbit out of his hat to get away
phil spade
@Phil · 0:17
Literally. After I get done posting this, I guess USC was listening to Swell here. Clay. Helton is out as USC coach. He is done minutes after I put him on the hot seat. He is gone. That's powerful, right there. Wow
Swell Team
@Swell · 0:15
phil spade
@Phil · 2:36
So I think he keeps his job in the next week. He's still going to stay on the hot seat because I think he might have some rough weeks ahead. But for the time being, no talk this week, Scott Frost, this continuing saga goes Nebraska stayed within a few points of Oklahoma, certainly much more than the 21 point or 23 points spread that was offered. But if you watch the social media, if you watch the reaction of the Nebraska faithful, they're just not having it
phil spade
@Phil · 4:31
This could be a long, big twelve season for Texas Tech, and if it is and he's not able to improve on four wins, he could find himself out the door after three seasons. Another guy. I got to put Mike Norville. You got to start mentioning him. Owen Ford, Florida State. I know he's only in his third year, but at the same time, another over season or another nonball season, and you're on your way to making Florida State irrelevant
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 1:54
I mean, essentially, if you go back and watch the game, that was the kiss of death right there, especially because LSU got out to a lead. I think that now that they're going into a no longer underrated Kentucky Beehive, if you will, if he doesn't pull off an upset there, there's going to be some chatter
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 0:41
And so I'm just kind of counting the that as proving me wrong because I've been down on Louisville most of the time and the way that they play the games after the opening week notwithstanding, they've looked better than I've given them credit for. And I'll probably probably go back to the well and try to bait him at some point again, because that's how I roll
phil spade
@Phil · 3:04
They're scoring a ton of points, and that's not a bad loss at all. And probably the biggest reason that I'm taking Satterfield off is because the reason I put him on is because I saw a lack of interest from the players. I saw disorganization, and since then, I have not seen that. I've seen them rally with a good win in Central Florida. All the players were definitely zoned in. And then the win at Wake Forest, they haven't given up
phil spade
@Phil · 4:36
This is a team that has a lot of players that will most likely be playing in the NFL, and they just look lethargic they look to be going through the motions. They certainly didn't play with the same intensity that Kentucky played. And that's alarming for fans of LSU that are used to seeing that high level of effort. And I'm not seeing that effort
phil spade
@Phil · 4:51
The alumni are getting absolutely fed up. And I think Trevor Alberts has a huge decision to make at the end of the season here, and it's going to be very interesting, especially if they don't make a bowl. I don't know where you go from here. I don't envy Trevor Alberts in this situation whatsoever. But, man, I just don't know how Scott Frost keeps his job. I think he's got to win out here for him to have a chance
phil spade
@Phil · 3:00
Well, this week really hammered home exactly why I started this well. And what we've been saying all along, the expectations in College football are extremely high, and nobody is spade, not one coach. And we saw that this week, both of these coaches who didn't even get a chance to get on the hot seat before they were fired and we had to let go. Both of them really took me by surprise. The first one, Matt Wells, at Texas Tech
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 3:08
So I want to jump in on both of those guys. Patterson was a surprise to me on the timing of that, but I am a little disappointed looking back that I didn't see this percolating a little bit. I mean, I've lamented TCUs defense not being very TCU, like on several different opportunities here on this platform. And really, I think it was just because in the back of my mind, well, just like you said, it's Gary Patterson, that's TCU
phil spade
@Phil · 5:00
But he finished first in the SEC east, and they went to the SEC East Championship game, where they played in Alabama. Pretty tight. People have quick forgetting memories on this. So what's led up to this? It just can't be a loss to Georgia, right? Well, they had a loss to LSU, they had a loss to Kentucky, both SEC road games, mind you. And it just can't be the loss to Georgia that has really brought this out
phil spade
@Phil · 3:58
But they've really been kind of in a tail spin as of late block to Pittsburgh and Syracuse and now Boston College, they do have a game coming up against Duke, which they should win. But then they play Miami and that Miami Virginia Tech game. That might be the loser of that game. The coach goes home. That very well could be the case. But I got to believe that Fuente seat is getting hot right now that Virginia Tech Miami game is going to be huge
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 1:29
Phil, just to reiterate one point that you had made on the Dan Mullins saga, I do think that this is the end of the line of excuses. Florida World had articles about these guys that got let go for I want to say a couple of seasons truthfully about them being part of the reason that they aren't able to get big recruits at certain positions. Apparently, the offensive line coaches style rubs top recruits the wrong way
phil spade
@Phil · 2:33
I know it seems like it's as bad as 13th year at Penn versus Nebraska, but he can come back for a fifth year. I don't know that a lot of people, especially the Nebraska fans, want to see that. I think they're excited to see what Scott Frost can do with somebody else at the quarterback helm. Just too much of the Scott Frost Adrian Martinez show. We know Frost is going to be back
Mitchell Ross
@mitchyro99 · 0:46
I thought he was going to be gone a long time ago, but I'm interested to see how they retool restock and play in the Big Ten next year. But I kind of like Scott Frost coming back. He's just an interesting character, a lot to talk about and just going for the big time
phil spade
@Phil · 1:05
You know, I just took a quick peek at their schedule for next year, and I think a ball game is well within reach for this team next year. The crossover games they avoid Michigan State, they avoid Ohio State. They have to go to Michigan, and they have to go to to Wisconsin and Iowa
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 4:01
And it was something to the effect of the coach that stayed at the same program after starting four straight losing seasons only produced a top 25 ranked teams like, once after that, this is just delaying the inevitable. If we're being honest with ourselves, the only thing that Frost can really do at this point in the long term, at least in my eyes, is all of a sudden Nebraska shows up next year, rattles off a ten and two season, makes a huge bowl game
phil spade
@Phil · 1:52
And then the next question, the Adrian Martinez. What does he do? That's going to be the most interesting thing for me. But you're right. Eight and four. He's gone anyway ways. So he needs a ten and two year. I just don't see it. It will be the last year
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 1:25
And how do you get around that when you're trying to bring kids in? And it's almost like the program if it's truly ready to move on and it's just delaying the inevitable is delaying success exponentially at that point. But I'm obviously not privy to the inside conversations on what he was told. I mean, maybe he said, look, you got to make a bowl game next year and you got to win this many games the year after that and whatever
phil spade
@Phil · 2:24
Yeah, Tony, one of the things that you mentioned, I have to re emphasize, and that is once you have a coach in a lame duck session like this, you're not only doing damage to that one year, but also exponential damage to years to come
phil spade
@Phil · 4:54
Only coach 13 games there, and Washington becomes the third school to be looking for a football coach this year. And it remains to be seen whether Stanford and Cal in Colorado might do the same thing. I don't know that they will. However, Kyle and Stanford will play each other in an upcoming game, and that might be one where the loser loses his job as well. From a head coaching standpoint, we'll see Stanford on a five game losing streak. That's very UNSAW
phil spade
@Phil · 1:43
Now Bush Davis is claiming that the University is sabotaging the football program. This is like going over to your friend's house and your friend's parents start fighting. You just leave the house, you just get the h*** out of there. Nobody really wants to hear this. You just walk away. So that's what we're going to do. We're going to walk away. We're going to move on and look at Miami
phil spade
@Phil · 3:05
500 record every year. And that's where they sit right now, five and five with two games to go. And that's not to say he did not have success this season. If you look at three games that he lost or that Virginia Tech lost in the last few minutes of the game, there's three, Syracuse, West Virginia and Notre Dame
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 3:10
What happened in that game is the Midwestern boys were ready to go play in the heat, and the guys that practice in Miami all year round were drained by the third quarter. And it's just one of those things where it's like, do you have the guys or are you not preparing correctly? I don't know what that problem is, but I'm with you that the ad is kind of the writing on the wall for that
phil spade
@Phil · 3:19
And that's their expectation. And if it's not in the national title, then ten wins, eleven wins, anything less than that is not successful. Remember, Nebraska fire Bolini for going nine and three every year. So the expectation is at least double digit wins. And the reality is there's just not that many College football teams for everybody to get ten wins. And if that's the expectation for everyone, you're going to have turnover
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 2:07
I mean, call me crazy, but part of the appeal is, you know, these kids go to your alma mater or, you know, maybe not you're alma mater, but the school you've rooted for forever, you get to see them develop for four years and possibly go on to the NFL, I guess from a collegial standpoint, there's a little bit of a family value to it, too, even if you've never met these people and this whole, well, I can transfer wherever I want, whenever I want
phil spade
@Phil · 4:20
So it didn't take much to kind of have that whole season unravel. And to me, it's just a prime example of just how delicate a coach is in this game. And you look at what Dan Mullen did in his first three seasons at Florida. Two of those three seasons, they went to New York New Year's, six bowls about as good as it's going to get at a program like Florida
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 2:38
Texas is routinely wanting to be the Texas back football team, and I had mentioned last week that if he could get them to a bowl game, he's probably going to have some good graces. Now, at this point, they can't get that 6th win. I don't know what it looks like in terms of if there are enough six and six teams, if he's one of the schools that could potentially sneak one. But I doubt it
phil spade
@Phil · 4:48
And this team has been just the opposite. They started off with a good win. They're going somewhat in a tail spin, however, I will say against West Virginia, even though they lost, they didn't quit. I will give them that they did not quit. But although they haven't looked that good, I don't see anything egregious that would constitute him being let go. And I think Jim Harbor has proven, hey, give him time
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 4:01
They get UTSA, which I don't mean to make jokes, but we've been on UTSA for a while. You just wonder what they're going to return. I truthfully, haven't gotten into the depth of that roster, but they're playing very good football this year. Is that a team that with Texas coming off of a presumed loss to Alabama, could compound that situation for Texas. Now they're one and two getting into Big Twelve play
phil spade
@Phil · 2:12
But he is one hidden camera, one drink, two drinks away from being on the hot seat there that I really didn't mention before, but I think that really does bear mentioning. I think he's always going to be highly scrutinized for that, I think fairly or unfairly, but that is one thing to also take into consideration
phil spade
@Phil · 2:51
Tom Allen is going to be back in Indiana after a very disappointing season. However, they let go of the offensive coordinator and Tom Allen took a pay cut in order to facilitate that. So a little bit of news there. I expect we'll hear from places like Syracuse and Cal on Dino Baby and Justin Wilcox from yesterday's games. There was a couple of coaches that were under fire
Tony Mosesso
@tonymo · 2:55
So there's that. And so this is a very interesting move. I just really wanted to highlight that. I don't know that Miami really did this the right way. I think they really kind of telegraphed their past here. And, I mean, who's to say armchair quarterbacking? This what the right way is it just feels like the school kind of did many dirty here. I mean, at least one report says that Miami had been aggressively pursuing Crystal Ball for several weeks before this decision
phil spade
@Phil · 2:47
And we saw that week to week where penalties started piling up. The play got sloppier. They weren't playing up to their full potential on both sides of the ball, and it showed. And then the offensive coordinator left to go to Akron. It's clear that the coaching staff probably had their minds elsewhere. And that's not a good sign. And I talked to some Miami fans who are skeptical about this higher, especially watching those Utah Oregon games. And I don't blame them
