The Big Holiday Debate: Is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

article image placeholderDie Hard (1988) - IMDb
Inevitably, somebody will bring up, what about Die Hard? And the response is diehard. That's not a Christmas movie. Are you kidding me? But then somebody in the room, usually a male person, will start the argument. It's during the holiday season. It takes place at a Christmas or holiday party. John McClain's wife is named Holly, and Santa actually does make an appearance. Well, somebody dressed as Santa and written with Ho Ho. Now I have a machine gun

Phil, to answer your question, I would definitely say that Diehard is a Christmas movie. Not only does it take place during Christmas, it's at a Christmas party. There are presents. There is Christmas music. It is snowing. And on top of that, his girlfriend's name, or excuse me, his wife, that he separated from. Her name is Holly. I think it's a Christmas movie

I saw Diehard many times when I was a kid, teen whatever, and loved it. So that's why I wanted to go see it again in the theater as an adult. And I have to say every single time I forget that the backdrop in Diehard is Christmas. That's, like, the least memorable thing about it as a movie for me. And I just I don't consider it Hard a Christmas movie. Really? Don't. I feel like Christmas is kind of like window dressing

What is a "Christmas movie"?

There a certain percentage that we need to be thinking about of the movie needs to be centered around Christmas imagery, thoughts, ideas, or is being held at the Christmas time frame enough to be, quote hard a Christmas movie. Then I would argue on top of that, at a more macro level, a holiday movie, any holiday in my mind is a movie that a wide swath of people can enjoy

I feel personally attacked by Bowie's comment. I just want to get that out here in the open. At any rate, I'm obviously kidding, but at any rate, I wanted to link here this write up that uses data to explain why Diehard is indeed a Christmas movie. And I think that if you read the whole thing, you would have a hard time arguing that it is not a Christmas movie. So I'm just going to link it here. It's

No, it’s not a Christmas film but I wouldn’t be mad if you thought it was.

It's cool to see genre bending movies or films such as Diehard. And as you stated, the movies that have the strict buy the beat Christmas films are very the Hallmarks are very you know what you're going to get, you know exactly what you're going to get when you pay for it or when you watch it. So I would say Die Hard is not a Christmas film. If I had to make a choice, I would say no, it's not

If Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie... then neither is Home Alone.

I'm sorry, I'm just going to be blunt here. This debate is already over. If Diehard is not a Christmas movie, then neither is Home Alone and someone else made a similar point earlier here. They have all the same movie beats. They both take place at Christmas. In fact, I would say the only thing that is needed to make hard a Christmas movie Christmas movie is not just that it happens around Christmas, but that Christmas is somehow integral to the plot

@groundedGeek Yes!

Grounded geek. I absolutely thank you for posting this, because, yeah, I'm in the same boat, and I think I mentioned it earlier that, you know, these two are both in the same genre, if you will. I don't know if genre is the right word, but they're very similar. When you think of them as in context to Hard Hard, a Christmas movie. More that I'm thinking about it

Okay okay BUT!

My family is really into the Mafia. I won't say anything further about that. But that being said, could you really compare Diehard to something like National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, also another Christmas favorite? Or It's A Wonderful Life or even Meet Me in St. Louis, which is one of my favorite romantic musical comedies that I consider a holiday film. I mean, how could you not with that rendition of Merry Little Christmas? I'm going to cry just thinking about it

Now see Bowie, I think you made the point for Diehard even more because, yes, it is a Christmas movie that you can watch any time of the year. It doesn't feel confined to Christmas, but it also feels perfect at Christmas. So Diehard is literally the Christmas movie that keeps on giving all year round

I'm gonna go with yes, it's a Christmas movie unofficially or asterisks Christmas movie. But with that, I'd like to raise another potential candidate for business eight. Or is it not hard a Christmas movie this case Rocky Four and Rocky Five. Rocky Four because I just watched it again the other day. It's 35 years old now as November 27 release in 19 five. The main events Rocky versus Drago takes place on Christmas

@WhoDiss Rocky IV and V were Thanksgiving weekend releases

Well, you know, who does? I've always kind of associated the Rocky franchise with the holidays, and I really wasn't sure why that was. I mean, I know that there's the Christmas Day of Rocky Four. Like you mentioned, there's a nice Thanksgiving Day scene and Rocky the original. But I did just a little bit of digging. And I found that three of the Rocky five movies, Rocky Four and Rocky five were all released on Thanksgiving Day weekend

I would say Besides the time that it takes place, Die Hard does have a few parallels with its wonderful life. Just to take another direction on that, John McLean gets to see what life would be like without him. And then he decides that he doesn't want to leave after all. Plus, he also saves the day from people that want to take money. And then, I guess, to take a little bit further

Hey, Ross, I just have to say that your analysis there is pretty darn great. Man. I appreciate when people work in other sorts of storytelling or media into their analysis rather than just saying, oh, there's Christmas decorations or it takes place on Christmas. And instead, you compared it to arguably one of the most hard a Christmas movie all time. So I just think that's awesome. And I agree with you completely

And I'm just kind of exhausted by this debate happening every year by people predominantly from the film Twitter universe thinking they're clever saying that this film is a Christmas movie. It's not. Please stop saying it. Guys, please stop. Just go watch Miracle on 34th street or National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. And let's call it a day

All right. Here's what I think so there's a lot of back and forth on the debate, which is fair, which is fine, a lot of opinions and feelings both ways, which is fair, which is fine. But one thing is indelible. Diehard takes place during Christmas at a Christmas party. These are things that are integral to the plot

Obviously, Die Hard is probably the greatest Christmas movie of all time. It is a Christmas movie and way better than any of the Hallmark films that are out there

I did want to share one of my favorite Christmas movies, and I posted a swell about it. It's Mr. Magoo's Christmas special, and I just wanted to spade some thoughts from there, and I'm posting a link to that swell. I'd love it if other people chimed in with some of their guilty pleasures for Christmas or holiday movies, or I'd really love to know the ones that are so bad. They're good

If you go to Netflix and search Christmas movies and I do not Die Hard is one of the answers not being I will tell you it is not a Christmas. I'll tell you what Christmas movies are for the family to gather around and celebrate being together and celebrate life and love. Diehard is a spectacular film, as I've just picked it as my action film. But it's a wonderful Life is your Christmas movie

Hey, it's JL. So is Diehard a Christmas Movie. Well, my response is if you believe Diehard is a Christmas movie, then for you it is a Christmas movie. I think, you know, we all can decide what is a Christmas movie to us or not to us and not depend on it corresponding with the status quo. Right. Because we all have different flavors and things that we're into and interested in
