And it's incredibly powerful when you can get back in touch with that and allow the expectations of Western society to not have the level of control on you as they do, as they continue to have in our modern culture. So I'm so grateful to be in multiple professions that prioritize human well being and human flourishing, because I think this world truly needs a holistic approach, not only in medicine, but to begin getting back to living in tune with nature

And then I go and do my 23 and me and find out that I actually have the genetic disposition on both accounts for celiac disease, which is insane. So I'm totally grateful and thankful that you are choosing to become a holistic doctor because I know for a fact that there's probably some other doctors who did not choose that route, who might look down upon holistic medicine because they're doing big boy things, they're doing the things that get them paid, that make them the money

And when you see a naturopathic physician or other physicians that are trained more holistically, you get an appointment that's like 60 to 90 minutes, even 2 hours, for them to look at your health history and to really, as much as they can get to the root cause of what is impacting your health and well being. And I'm sure that you found it empowering to get like, an accurate diagnosis and to also have a doctor that can partner with you in actually getting you better

I was going back and learned about the Christianity faith, about the sacred secretion. Came a part of that and that story as well, which is pretty amazing. But I got to imagine that's got to be really difficult. But that's all assumptions for me. I would like to hear from you. Can you describe what it was like when you were going through that? How did it affect you? How did it affect the relationships that you've had and how did it affect your practice?

And hearing these negative messages from the church about being homosexual or being transgender or being anything other than SIS, gender and straight or heterosexual, and hearing these messages constantly and repeatedly. And now, as a yoga therapist, as a future physician, I know that each time I heard these messages, they were a literal assault to my nervous system. Any trauma is an assault to our nervous system

And whatever is the biggest energy, it's going to remember that whether it was good or bad, which is insane. And to be dealing with that your entire life and then getting to that age, I'm assuming it's like around 1920, where you had your first panic attack, I mean, that's got to be very daunting. And I wanted to ask, what were the thoughts that were actually racing through your head? Did you also feel like, okay, this is it

The reason that trauma becomes embodied in the nervous system is ideally, I'm just going to use the old school example of I've already mentioned this on Swell, but I'm going to reuse it is imagine being back in caveman times and some big animal, a tiger, a bear, a dinosaur, I don't know. Well, dinosaurs go way back, but nonetheless, there is a threat happening against you

The only thing constant in the universe is everything's changing. But you got to be that way too. You got to allow yourself to change with it or else you're just going to be this one thing trying to go against the galaxy. Guess what? You're not going to f****** win. You're going to lose every single time you try to go up against it. And so I got to imagine that too as well

That becoming one and acceptance of change happening in the world. And this reduction of harm and suffering in this world, I think, is the entire basis of yoga. So our Western culture promotes yoga as an exercise routine. And that is fundamentally problematic because yoga is so much more than that. The word yoga translates from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means to yoke or to unite. So the question is, like, what are we yoking? What are we uniting?

@futurenmdyogi

#yogateacher #yogatherapist #dharma #yoga #india

And so to be disconnected from that is not yogic. And it's really sad to me, just the toxic culture that has been created in the Westernized yoga world that, as I've been saying, is such a contrast to what is actually represented in the yoga and Dharmic traditions. And so I say all this to say, please pursue and find authentic yoga teachers that not only come from that culture, but actually, actually have the education and training to back it up

@futurenmdyogi

I had no idea that it was such a big issue to support Indian yoga teachers. But where I've gone far with my journey is that that's what I want. I truly want someone who comes from a Master, someone who has learned from Saguru or learned from Ramdas or something. One of them that I would love, because those words travel through them, travel through them, comes to me

And this is the distortion that happens in Western yoga, is when you look at Ashchanga yoga, which is the eight limb past, you have the yamas and neyamas intentionally coming before doing asana, the physical postures or pranayam breast practices or any of the concentration practices that lead up to sitting in meditation. So the interesting thing is our Western culture takes away the philosophy, the ethical practices of yoga, and goes immediately to asana

Okay, so I just said all of that to say that yoga, as I've mentioned already, is a practice beyond the physical postures. And in reference to that kind of definition, that schloca that I mentioned in the Yoga Sutra, that yoga is a cessation of the movements of the mind. We have all of these tools in yoga, yes, including asana, including breast practices, including practices to concentrate the mind, and including things like mindfulness and meditation

It's like, I want to be that person that even in the midst of war, I will stop, look at this flower and appreciate it, because I already know my consciousness. Whether this body dies or lives, goes sideways, inside out, it doesn't matter. My consciousness is solid. It's going to stay intact and I'm going to move on, hopefully. But I like that you brought that up

@futurenmdyogi
So the one thing that has influenced me to get to the point that I am today, as all of you have heard throughout this podcast today, I've done a lot of work on myself personally through my own yoga practice. And because of the experiences that I have gone through growing up as a pastor's kid, dealing with the trauma of growing up in the church and hearing all of those messages, I recognize all of those experiences have influenced me and gotten me to where I am today

My soul is innately feminine, and that's the way that I felt. And the only language that I had growing up was there's an association with gay men being feminine. And I think it's completely preposterous that that's the case, because there are many gay men that don't have a feminine body in their bone

And your thoughts, your favorite TV show, everything stays. Because hopefully where we go is much higher dimensions. At least that's my hopes. And I just want to say the way that you put yoga and how that led to you finding your empathy and taking the plunge of going to medical school again, as a surgical tech, I see what that does to people. And man, I tell you, if that's not a rock star way of living, I don't know what is

But yes, if anyone has any particular questions about Naturopathic medicine, about yoga, about yoga therapy, I am perfectly willing to send you any resources that I can. And actually I do want to give a shout out. I realize that I'm doing this. So there is a women's retreat happening here in Scottsdale. I was going to say Sedona, but Scottsdale there's a women's retreat calling Unleash Yourself, of which I will be co facilitating
