Impulsivity vs. Spontaneity: Is there really a difference?

article image placeholderUploaded by @Noalily
Hey, everybody, I hope you're having a fabulous Saturday today. I wanted to talk about impulsivity and just like, the distinction between being spontaneous and between and being impulsive, which is something that I think I might struggle with a little bit. And it came up a lot today. So basically earlier today I was at a pumpkin patch, and I was really exhausted at a late night out last night. And maybe because I was feeling like a lack of control, I don't even know

Enjoy my picture from the pumpkin patch

But I also agree with you that I definitely find myself to be more spontaneous when I have external responsibilities that I don't want to care for. I am more of a drive there when you have something to do to do something else. It's fun out of the blue. But I think again, definitively. I think like Spontaneity works off of impulsiveness. I think they're obviously like the same word, but yeah, I don't know. Good question

Usually we consider stubborn, like, you don't know when to stop. And like, persistent would be more like you're continuing despite it being difficult. So there's some small subtlety there for spontaneity. I usually consider in a more positive way, like, oh, you want to do something just out of the blue, and it doesn't really have too much of a problem

A perspective from improvisational theatre

We would thwart each other. It would be a bad show. No one would have a good time. So I think stepping back from the context of theater and improv comedy, my take on it is that spontaneity is from a place of well, I was going to say joy, but also self discipline and skill and seeing a bigger picture having a larger goal in mind. Whereas impulsivity comes from a place of fear or stress or distraction or procrastination and not dealing with consequences

Just wanted to quickly say thank you all for responding on here. I really just love everything that you've all been saying. Oscar, I think it's really interesting that you bring up like, yes, Siri. And with the idea of their job really relying on spontaneity, but if that's their job, then is it really being spontaneous because their whole thing is seek discomfort? I don't know
