Podcasting. Do you find it hard to gain an audience?

article image placeholderBuilding a podcast
I have not been really successful with my podcast, and I questioned maybe it was me or my content and I don't do that no longer. It was just a big struggle. I used to get maybe about 100 views, which is nothing in the long run, and I would give up easily. That's a fault of mine. And I would get frustrated and say, Screw this

Talking about building an audience for a podcast. Do you find it difficult to achieve and hold an audience?

Back in 2005, I started a podcast in San Francisco, and as a performer before that, I really didn't want to be stuck in the studio. So what I did with my podcast is I made them live and I brought my recording equipment into cafes and I actually recorded live and I had an audience. It started with a small audience, and then it kind of grew to the final shows being around 75 people. And it had a really good vibe

Hi, Deb, thank you for the insightful feedback. And I think that's awesome that you had a live podcast thing going on. I think that's very inventive, and it sounds like it was like like kind of like your own woman show type deal. I could be wrong, but it sounds like it's like a one man show type thing, and you had gained an audience. And I think that's fantastic

Luck and opportunity.

So I myself have been caught in this dilemma loop, if you will, where there's a part of me that wants to make podcast. And there's another part of me that wants to make Swell. And yes, I can do them both. But ultimately, it feels as if the podcasting is a bigger challenge to to to to gain an audience. That for you. There's already an audience here, regardless of if you built it or not

I think it's a cool, unique concept. It's a great app for building content. I'd rather enjoy it. But yeah, podcasting is really a full time job, and there are two different things. Podcasting as well. Absolutely. Podcasting just takes a lot more a hard work. Like you said, you have to build that audience, and it's just a lot of hard time and a lot of work. And you really got to go 100% full throttle to do it

I don't really do a lot of them, but I think over a thousand is a good milestone and I do them really for my benefit. It's not really a podcast about a certain subject. I'm not a master of any kind of any field per se, but kind of just like a general talk about what's going on in kind of a light hearted manner. But first and foremost, I do it because I enjoy doing it. I do get the listeners and everything

100%. Totally. But at some point, you want an audience because really what's the point? I was not getting nearly close to those numbers and not that I'm fixated on numbers. But you kind of want an audience. That's why you're putting your stuff out there. And I just found it very difficult to to to to gain an audience didn't have the patience for it. Maybe I just didn't have the mature patience to wait for an audience

Film is a tough sell in today’s audio climate.

So it's a very saturated market to talk film, and especially what can you do to make a different spin on it, as opposed to what's already out there. I tip my hat to those people who like you yourself other do like a niche sort of podcasting where you're sticking to one idea. I think it's easier to market that sort of thing, but at the same time, I guess I'm thinking about myself as a content creator

I'm just a guy in a suit, but I throw my content out there and hopefully it sticks and it will reach some people and gain an audience. But yeah, I mean, I haven't even touched on that clubhouse. I don't even know what that's about. I mean, I'm on Instagram and I'm on here and this is fairly new platform and I'm digging it. I really am. I'm liking it. I'm not bashing it at all
