Hollywood, Give our Elderly Actors some Work!

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
Because that is real life. We have an increasing aging population, so their presence is needed on screen to tell the story. So I just want to share that. I love the commercial. It's absolutely adorable. It was about seven actors in there, like I said, all age 70 to 100. And the acting they did in this commercial was amazing. It was great. And so, yes, let's put our elderly actors to work

I am going to have to search for this commercial because that sounds extremely cute and creative but social media is where it's at, right? And so why not create a well done call to action and allow people to spread the message and advocate on your behalf or champion for you on your behalf. And I can honestly say because of their age and them being in the industry, my mind automatically associates that with wealth and, oh, they are retired

You're not going to be able to remember all these different lines, or you may have to take it in smaller chunks than you used to. We get that. And so I think that accommodations should be made for actors as they get older to be able to still work, but tailor that work to fit their current lifestyle and their current age. And some of the challenges that come with aging, their physical abilities might be a little bit limited

So it's good. If you type in to Google, like, older actors nonprofit, you'll see a lot of nonprofits that are dedicated to this conversation. I'm not familiar with this one commercial, but I'm going to go look it up. Thank you so much for posting it. And yeah, it's that conversation of what is beauty and what's accepted and who can grow old and the irony of all this

Is there psychological reasons behind it? Like, have we become so vain and shallow that we don't even want to see older people depicted in television? Or is it more related to the people in the industry itself and in Hollywood, just becoming more shallow? But they're a reflection of us. So, yeah, totally. I don't get it either. And particularly for women, it's worse than men because men can age in Hollywood and they're considered seasoned

But to instead continue to use young actors to play elderly roles versus using elderly actors, I don't understand the ageism in Hollywood when it comes to experience and things of that nature that the elderly population can lend to a creative work. They have experience. There are things they can teach younger actors. There are opportunities for them to mentor younger actors, and we're just not utilizing those resources. And I understand we're in a youth centric culture now where everything is about being young and younger and younger

@DBPardes

Now, you have the Walmarts of the world that will give jobs to elderly people, jobs as greeters or jobs as cashiers, where they're able to sit and do those sorts of things. But it's hard nowadays to find jobs that are willing to accommodate the elderly population, whether they choose to work or whether they're forced to work. So ageism is really big in the whole workforce, not just in mainstream corporate America and all in retail, but even in Hollywood

I've thought about this quite often because I am surrounded by the elderly mother, aunties, uncles, and they're very fascinating people. And that's one reason why I think about it. The other reason is I am a Bollywood fan. I grew up on Bollywood film, and I've noticed that the men get coles. The older men are given coles more often than the women. The women are given roles as mothers, grandmothers. They're not seen as individuals by themselves
