Is Customer Service a Lost Art? 🥹

article image placeholderUploaded by @MsColes77
Hey, it's well cast family. I hope you're having a relaxing Wednesday night. I had to come on here and just briefly talk about customer service in 2023 because I believe that the art of good customer service has become a lost art. I remember working in retail. I've worked in retail twice in my life. I believe. I've worked at Kroger. I worked at Walmart. Oh, and I worked at JCPenney, so three times

We just have lost so much of that. We've lost so much of that want to just be humans with each other. And I think that it discourages people from going shopping in the stores. Like, it discourages me because I can't stand people with a crabby attitude. Yeah. So this is a really interesting topic, and I'm just interested to hear what everybody else has to say about it as well

If you came to India and you engaged with what the average customer service over here feels like, you might go back with the assumption, oh, it's way better where I'm from right now. A couple of things. There are a couple of things in your swell cast which was really interesting, particularly around the shift that's happened in how customer service representatives, or employees too for that matter, at a retail store were expected to be purchased to US. He's in college. He's applying for his very first, quote, unquote, real job, part time, because he's a student, but he has the attitude of, like, well, I don't want to work here, I don't want to work there. If this doesn't pay this, then I don't want to work, and I'm going, wow. I didn't have the luxury when I was that age of being so picky either

And I'm not trying to minimize or downplay what seems like a horrific day to him, right? But it is. In the grand scheme of things. Talk to the person who was just diagnosed with a terminal illness and is told they have a week left. That's probably the worst day. Okay. Or that someone had to bury a child. Or last week I was doing an Uber ride and passed by a dead body on the street where someone had ran and hit this person and kept going

And the cashier, she didn't end up losing her job, but she definitely was talked to because this particular customer, although her attitude, she was very entitled. That was the problem. She had a very entitled attitude, but she was a very regular customer who purchased a lot of merchandise on a weekly basis. So they wanted to make sure they took care of her because they know that she's going to come here every week and buy this $300 worth of groceries for her nonprofit

Not a big deal. But what if there's a major issue in the store and you have no manager present? Like, why don't you have a manager on duty? I don't understand this, but it's like the sign of the times. This is the times we live in now. And it's just mind blowing to see how things have changed so much, so drastically over the years. I get it. I'm 45. I'm of a different generation

They're desperate for people to come in and work, and in order to keep business operating, they need you, so they're not going to get rid of you. So there's no fear or respect. And as customers, we tolerate it. That's the problem. We'll have a bad customer service experience. But guess what? We'll be back. We'll be back

Exactly. I mean, if there's no manager present and nobody to help you, it's kind of like a free for all. Makes zero sense to me. That would be frustrating because you're just going in to return something, which is very normal, everyday thing that people do. You wow. That's surprising. There was nobody there to help you or the employees. I'm not even sure what to say about that
