#AskSwell Tipping Used to be for Servers…now it’s for everyone!

But what say us Swellcast family, what is up with all of this extra tipping that people are asking for? Where did this come from? Where did this phenomenon start that we now have to tip everybody? Anytime we go into a restaurant or establishment, we have to tip everybody. What say you? Do you tip everybody every time you go into a restaurant? Do you tip for everything you get? Even if you don't sit down and eat?

Do you tip everytime you are given the opportunity?

I feel like there's a lot of places that I go to where people make a significant amount less money than bartenders in major metropolitan cities, and tipping is nowhere to be seen, but the work they're performing is often far more intense. And that's not to say that bartending is easy. I'm just using it as one example

And I remember back when I worked there, customers would give us tips from time to time. I mean, we weren't racking up on tips, but we would get tips from customers, especially if they were regular customers and they liked our service. They would give us tips on top of their order even though it wasn't required. And I remember going back to this cafeteria establishment recently, and I see where they have now put up signs telling customers not to tip

You're definitely not alone in sensing that tipping is getting a little bit out of control in the US. And I've seen a number of articles on this, and my theory is that we were very generous in a post COVID era, especially in the food service industry

I'm sure that they were hurting financially from that. And yes, I can believe that we were probably overly generous just out of sympathy and feeling bad for their current situation and then just people being overly stressed. And so I'm sure they probably had some moody customers not wanting to eat outdoors and all the things that they had to do, like eating with masks and having masks on and stuff like that. I'm sure they had to deal with a lot of cranky, unpleasant people as a result

It's kind of expected. Of course, in the restaurant industry, servers rely on tips to make their living. But what we'd be seeing with so much increased tipping in places where people are being paid what would be considered a fair wage, but it still isn't enough. And it has to do with broader economic issues, from inflation to just sort of devalue of a dollar. So in many ways, it is out of control

Hey, Glenn, thank you so much for chiming in. I agree it is an epidemic and it is a sign of a much bigger problem are people making wages that fairly compensate them for the work they do, but also to support their standard of living. And historically, minimum wage has never been a wage that could adequately support someone in today's economy, no matter how little expenses they have. Most people on minimum wage alone are really struggling to make ends meet

Ahead. So my thing with tipping, if it's for a to go order, I don't tip, because in my mind, it's okay. The food preparers chefs, sous chefs have prepared the meal, and then they placed it in the Togo container. Maybe at most, the person at the counter had taken my order, processed the payment for the order if I didn't already order online, and then put the container in a bag

And then today, I went to get some cupcakes from a cupcake shop, and, girl, they scanned my card, and here comes the tip screen. And I'm thinking, all you did was put cupcakes in a box and slid them across the counter. Like you said with the food, the person puts it in a bag and leaves it on the counter waiting for you to come and pick it up. The stuff ain't going to get in the bag by itself

And I'm like, but I came here to pick my food up and I'm hoping that they're getting paid for providing the service. But no, I don't typically tip like that. If I'm in a restaurant providing that the service is good or I will tip according to the service
