This Is A Kate Winslet Appreciation Swell

article image placeholderThis Is A Kate Winslet Appreciation Post
This series hits home in particular because it takes place in Pennsylvania, that space that exists between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and having grown up in Pittsburgh and had family from this area for as long as we can remember, since we came to the States, this show hits home in a very strange and interesting way for me. But having Kate Winslet at the center of it, I didn't know that this is something I've been waiting for my entire life

With HBO's new show, Mare of Easttown, it's time for me & @JohnDeVore to gush about one of the best actresses of our time https://bit.ly/3y3H0G0

Yeah Kate!!

I think she's got so many demons that have nothing to do with the plot line, and they really invite us into sort of consider them and how they show up as like weird energies around how she's comporting herself through her actual plot line. So it's really multilayered for me. I think she's fantastic. And I wait every single year to see what else she's going to bust into in terms of challenges as an artist. And this is not a disappointment

It's a big cheesy corny epic, a lot of eye rolling moments, but I don't think it's boring and I think she's really underrated. I love her in anything. I love her in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I loved her in The Reader, another very dark movies. I just think she is a very unique actor. Movie star, multiple Academy Awards. She's won, and then she does some very dark movies

@JohnDeVore Walking the dog thinking about Winslet & humor

And sometimes I'm wondering, is this purposeful or I feel like there's almost an awareness in Winslet portrayal of Mary. Shehan there's like this awareness of how some of the character is a little bit of a character. But caricature, I feel like I didn't pronounce that well enough. But she's adding, like you said, this gravitas to it. And I'm curious how you've been thinking of how humor is working in the show so far

@JohnDeVore Gothic PA

And yes, let's please talk about Pennsylvania. And I think it's sort of hilarious that most of the films that are shot where I grew up are films like The Road, which is, you know, about Out, A. Dystopia. And also Batman, Gotham city

I don't know if she's a comedic actress, but look, there's two things that make Mervtown special. I think one it is Kate Winslet without it. It's just another typical gloomy sort of who done it where some poor young woman is murdered and, you know, it's some creepy dude, but it's Kate Winslet. But the other thing, I think what you're perceiving and the humor is I think that the creators have compassion for the town and the people

Speaking a little more about Winslet and comedy, you reminded me of the movies The Holiday, which I completely forgot about, but it's The Romcom, starring Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black and Kate Winslet

So, yeah, I had not really considered how much. Just like, really entertaining human comedy is in Mayor of East Town, and you absolutely need to watch anything with Gene Smart in it. She was in a very high concept superhero series on HBO called Watchmen. It was a sequel to a beloved graphic novel. It was a show that wrestled with white supremacy and the masks that we wear. And she's incredible in that. She's in a new show now also called The Hack

@JohnDeVore Heroes & vulnerability

I believe that this may be her first time as an executive producer as well. I thought I read that, but I could be wrong. So someone fact check me on that. I'll go fact check myself after this. But I think Contagion may be the first role that made me be like, wow, she can really carry a movie, and I don't mean that because, you know, the movies itself was bad

Predictions & Jean Smart https://s.swell.life/SSXKCpjCl2Ttd9C

So the the question I had that I'm really curious to hear your thoughts about. And I mean, we can continue this conversation as long as as long as we like through the rest of the season of Marrow East Town. If we want, maybe we could start in New Swell for that. That's just responses to the episodes that swell be coming out for this season. But I'm really curious if you have any predictions for where you think the first season of this show is going to go

Love this conversation!

But I'm curious to know if you've ever seen Romance and Cigarettes. I'm looking at her IMDb page and this 2005 movie directed by John Tutoro. It says it's a musical, Christopher walking in it. So of course, it's going to be dancing. James Gandalfini, Susan Sarandon and Kate Winslet Down and Dirty Romance, but it's also a musical. I'm really curious

I'm just saying that the domestic part is so much more interesting. We haven't talked about this. For instance, Meher Sheen is kind of a corrupt cop, right? I love her, but she planted evidence on an innocent person, and that's kind of f***** up just drama feels more compelling than this murder mystery that I've seen before. In that essay that has sparked this conversation. I jokingly refer to Mayor of East Town as Billy Joel's

@Tim

I read about it briefly and saw who else stars in it. And I was just like, what the h*** is this movie? And I also definitely want to see it. So if you do end up watching it, please start a conversation on it because I'm definitely going to watch it. It would motivate me to move it up on my list higher, and it would be really fun to talk about it

Mare Watch Party https://s.swell.life/SSXdahkzaRK0aeU

We sort of know what's going to happen, generally speaking, at least. And you're right. We haven't talked about the fact that in the show, Winslet plays a corrupt cop. You're right. She does plant evidence on someone. Not a good look. But do you feel like you feel more empathy for her in her corrupt copness because she's playing the role compared to other roles we've seen like this
