Do breast cancer genetic tests scam women?

article image placeholderHow genetic tests like BRCA exploit breast cancer fears in my patients - Part 1
But 50% of women don't develop breast cancer, even with the same gene. And this is really interesting, and I think it's empowering because it reminds us that your genes aren't the end all BRCA. The mutation for BRCA is the most common and most powerful genetic linkage for breast cancer, at least the one that's of all the widely tested gene mutations, and it's only a coin flip, 50%. So what does that tell us about the other 50%?

But now that I have listened to this a lot more calmer, because I can see that it's not the be all and end all tests that we thought it was. You're right. That's how it's marketed. It's marketed like that. And so we easily fall for this. And I'm so glad that I heard you swell on this. And I thank you for it. I'll go do some research now. So thank you. Bye

Thank you!

And the logic behind your Swell here really helps me understand the egregious messaging that is procured by these organizations to really target fear and a lack of critical thinking around that fear so that it becomes a very knee jerk sort of peer to peer fear based relationship. And that's something that I'm always looking at in terms of health

Medicine is rarely black and white!

Great comments, everyone. Thank you. I did add links to the YouTube videos where you can see more information on this Angelina Jolie story is actually quite interesting, and I referenced it in the videos because in medicine, things are rarely really black and white, and a lot of people in the media want to make things appear that way. Unfortunately, medicine is more nuanced. Science does not just do it or don't do it, even though it's easy for advertising interests to paint pictures that way
