Goodreads Choice winners: Thoughts

If they get that notoriety from being the popular book Club picks, a lot of times they'll get voted onto the Good Reese Choice Awards, whether people necessarily read them or not. I just wanted to hear what you all think about the winners

@loribpalmer, @tidyingtheshelf, @bowie. Book recs @NamelessJournal

It's a popularity contest. So whatever is up and coming on bookstagram and people are talking about it, and that's what you're reading. That's what you're going to vote for. Okay with that said. Okay, so let's just get that out of the way with that said. Okay, what would the book picks? Okay. Vanishing Half for historic fiction. Absolutely. I voted for it. Vanishing Half? Absolutely. Midnight Library over anxious people

Shanas, I love the idea of discussing the Goodreads nominees on your podcast. It would be really fun to get maybe like two or three other people on there that have read some of the books that you haven't read. I don't know about the logistics of all the that, but that would be really cool. Like you talk about the ones that you've read and somebody else talk about the ones that they've read and just talk about them

Great idea @loribpalmer

Laurie, I like that. You know, where I can get people in who have read those books. So make sure we get people with all the books. And maybe I'd have to do something on, like, books. Graham Gun, who has read the this and who wants to be on my podcast? And then we go at each other, like, let's say you'd read a book and let's say it's like, anxious People versus Midnight Library

@loribpalmer 5 votes!!! FIVE!!!!

Oh, wow. I mean, I'm still blown a blown away by that. So I just thought I would let you know that's just like, crazy. But anyway, I'll catch you later. Bye

I did see Erica's post last night. Five votes. I can't even imagine that's just crazy. Like you said, 72,000 votes, and it came down to five votes. So another example of you can never say your vote doesn't matter, right? It even matters on things like the Good Reach Choice Awards. But yeah, super crazy. And I totally agree with both of those picks. I believe I voted for anxious people. I think that was my vote for Fiction

@loribpalmer. And start reading The Testaments today!

And so it's just going to be like, what? So next year, when goodreach comes up, I'm going to put it on my calendar, but we're going to figure this out and do it on the podcast. And that is going to be a fun ride. All right. I will catch you later. Oh, by the way, I started Testaments today. Three pages in. Okay. Out of 400 pages for what that's worth

@loribpalmer Mystery & Thrillers!

I read a decent amount of books that were published this year for me, but definitely not as much as in past years. And so yeah, it's one of those things where I just didn't feel like it was fair for me to vote in some ways because I maybe read one in a couple of the categories, but it was really interesting seeing who won

Evening mumbles... 🤦🏽‍♀️

I mean, I'll read a mystery or thriller, but it's not something that I'm kind of like, yeah, mystery thriller. Give that to me. I've read a few because I just didn't know they were mystery or thriller. Someone said, oh, it's a good book. Okay, I'm reading it and I'm like, oh, okay. It's not bad. I like it. I don't know. It like I said, it's just not

Shanas, you somehow always crack me up. Yeah. So I think it's funny thinking about, like, the ethics of voting in the Goodreads Choice Awards, and I know for for me. So usually I vote every year, and it's definitely not because I've read all of the books, even in just one category. Definitely not. I wish that I was that fast of a reader and had my s*** together enough to do that over the year

What about Migrations?

And you have the winner getting 73, 828 votes. So somewhere between 20, 70, 30, 00 votes is where we're at. And I'm disappointed. I think the reason Migrations got so few votes is because I think a lot of people didn't read the book. So again, it boils down to marketing bookstagram. You know, who is reading what book? And that okay. Here's. My next question was against the loveless World

Hey, Laurie, glad to connect with you as well. And Shahnaz, thanks for the tag. This has been a good conversation to be listening into, because I'll be honest, I generally am, you know, on the side headlines with regards to the Goodreads awards. Like you said, I think in an ideal voting situation, people should have read all or at least most of the nominee books within a category before even going ahead and voting. Otherwise, it's just not fair

Novelty, perhaps. And bookstagram! @NamelessJournal

I mean, did Mexican Gothic really win against Stephen King with so many votes? And I think to the winner of the fiction, also Midnight Library, winning over Bachman, who is very well established, very well loved. But you talk back men yet. Matt Haywood, Midnight Library One and somewhere I draw back and I think there probably is a graph or a timeframe or some kind of a trend where it clicks and or changes because times are always changing. Our leaders are changing

There were no arcs of this book clearly a popularity contest and I thought it was interesting that Untamed was the next closest, which is a book that I did not like but got a lot of hype and I was probably in the minority on the not liking Untamed debut debut. Let me pull that up too

The Goodreads loser badge! 😂

You've only read two books. Loser. You get the Goodreads loser tag. There you go. Put that right on your blog and here's the link for you to put it on. I don't know. No, I'm not drunk. I am not. I'm just being obnoxious as I usually am anyway. Okay. I do want to say okay. Yes. Ms. Trees and Thrillers are not my go to category, but I do like them, too

I love hearing your reaction to Untamed because I totally agree. I literally rated it like two stars on good reason. I even thought two stars was generous, but I still do two stars. I think I wrote my review or what I was talking to someone else about it. I'm like this could have been a really good blog post instead of a whole freaking book. It had a good overall message. I liked the things that she had to say about Greece

Let’s plan Long Bright River in Jan! @loribpalmer @NamelessJournal @bowie

We've done thousandspended sons, which is women's fiction, just fiction. And all of that a lot to digest in that one, which is really great. And, of course, we've done a Handmaid's tale, and that was dystopia. And still, there's a lot to discuss and that we also did My Dark Vanessa, which was hilarious. I don't know where average Joe is. There was a gentleman here

On a walk! Yes to Long Bright River yay!!

It's part of why I really wanted to read this book and getting to experience it with other people is like, the best news ever. So really looking forward to that for January. So thank you. And I also love the idea of switching up John is because I have really been trying to read more Sci-Fi and fantasy as well. So absolutely. Let's do it

@bookishpodcast Migrations!

Shanaz, I was laughing that you brought up migration because as soon as you said it, I realized, oh, I got that book at the beginning of this year or whenever it came out because my good friend who works at my favorite bookstore here recommended it to me. And I have really been wanting to start reading it, but I feel like I've put it off partially because in my mind, I was like, oh, that's going to be like a serious dent read

@loribpalmer Untamed!

I'm wondering if there's anything else about it that you didn't like, was it Justin, like the Pros was just a lot or was it mostly it just felt repetitive and like, it wasn't really saying all that much that was newly

And if you're going to say that and you're going to find 25 different ways to say it, then it kind of gets a little draggy. I don't know. I felt like, oh, I should like it because everyone likes it. So I was a little bit swayed by pure pressure, I think. And I was like, oh, yeah, you're right. This is good. This is good
