Gender Binaries Challenged in Film Set in Afghanistan

article image placeholderThe 2003 Film "Osama"
In fact, in this world portrayed in the film, anything feminine is suspect and must be regulated and essentially hidden. If gender binaries hadn't been so rigid, Osama would have been able to present as a female without being subjected to the negative consequences of being a woman. Not as extreme. But many American women take on traditionally male gender qualities in order to progress in work or protect themselves from sexual aggression. Male presentation is rewarded in a way that a female one isn't always

"Osama" reveals the danger that gender binaries pose. In Afghanistan it was even life-threatening to be a woman. #gender #queer https://bit.ly/3jE1Oi4

Can't wait to watch it

And losing that respect, and this somehow causes a lot of confusion and a lot of hatred because they're like, why would you give that up? People seem to think that me identifying as a female email is my choice, but it's not. I am female. I just chose to accept that, but it wouldn't be such a hard decision. Should those gender binaries not be as rigid as they are

Wow what an important topic, thank you!

And if you're in one box you're seen as superior over the other box. And this is societal norm. But it is when you start on picking and seeing kind of things like this, like the Taliban taking over and taking women's rights away. It's toxic. And I definitely agree we need to work on this gender binary malarkey because for some people, for women, it's it causes a lot of problems
