What do you think about the Netflix employee walk out?

Additionally, I didn't think his jokes were funny, and I would argue that many weren't jokes at all. It's obvious why people would find these parts of his show offensive, but there really isn't anything new in terms of his transphobia and antigay ideas. He's been on repeat for quite a while in previous performances, including those on Netflix before. And so the streaming service should have expected that its performance wouldn't be well received by all

Hi, Melissa, thank you so much for bringing this as well as always. You are ahead of me. I had no idea what was going on and have just had to do a bit of a Google search after listening to this webcast to catch catch up on things. So in answer to your questions on whether, first of all, whether we think it's a good thing. I personally think the workout, yes, is a good thing

But the comment I want to make in this conversation has to do with just the industry that is television and streaming content. They're competing deeply with other streaming services. And I think Netflix is trying to figure out, is this all good for business and is all this blasphemy good for business? I just was reading an article about how Facebook is changing their name ultimately

@NLOFrank good points

You actually made me think about two things. One is you mentioned the response from other creators on Netflix. I think that could put pressure on Netflix to change their culture and change their content direction. So I'll be curious who stands with these employees and actually speaks with their work and whether they'll work with Netflix or not

Bad news does, too. So I don't know if that was a factor in anybody's perception of it. One thing that I found interesting in an article with the executive, the President, I don't remember his name. They said, Are you going to take the streaming content of Dave Chappelle off Netflix? And he said we've had very few calls for that. Which makes me wonder what he thinks the walk out is about. What do they expect that they want?

I remember saying you at the end as the other actors did in the scene when it was revealed that the football kicker was indeed a man before. Sorry as a spoiler for those who haven't saw Ace Ventura yet. But I bring this up to say and to highlight that this level of comedy, this perception of, quote, unquote truth, has been around for quite a long time. And Dave and all his infinite wisdom, is not doing anything revolutionary by talking about this culture

LAZY COMEDY

This is something I have been following. I've seen some images and film from The Walkout yesterday. I believe it was before I touch on that. I think it's important that we acknowledge something that Rowan said because I think that that he makes a very good point, which is that this sort of comedy has been normalized and present for a very long time

It's kind of interesting because I have liked the past couple of Dave Chappelle's new specials, and I found him playing the line around trans people and gay people. I found it interesting because even if they weren't the funniest, I still respected him trying to find the jokes there because rather than being definitely afraid, he seemed to be like, okay, we're just kind of like trying to find the fun part of that. And obviously there can be funny parts about being trans and being gay

@FryedOreo thanks for an interesting perspective

But he's being hurtful and raising issues that you said have been done for a really long time, and it just isn't original at this point. So I appreciate your feedback, and I think that you are bringing an interesting perspective to this

@Taylor Joe Rogan influence

Thank you, Taylor, for mentioning the relationship of Joe Rogan and Dave Chappelle. I think that Dave Chappelle is buying into a lot of this cancel culture reaction or the idea that you stand up against this PC mentality. And maybe it is the influence of Joe Rowan because Chappelle is being used and talented as this bastion of free speech by Conservatives who are anti trans, are anti difference and anything that threatens them. So he's being used in that way

@Charlieri lots of great points

But that was a sentiment that he was saying that the gay person was heckling him or reacting to him in this privileged way, and it is pitting a race against sexuality and saying one is more legitimate in terms of oppression than another. And you also touch on this punching down. And I guess that's what I was kind of reacting to is that the punching down makes it not funny. And sometimes punching down can be done in a funny way

I guess for so many people on the right, the left in between, however, we want to classify social values and to see that businesses are knowingly using it to get views and engagement feels incredibly unethical to me. And is that what the heart of this walkout is for me, at least? So I'm really curious to see what comes of it

@bowie fascinating social marketing

I guess this is going to be maybe a boundary that people are going to vote with their dollars. We'll see. And one thing I saw that the President said that was interesting. They said that a lot of the employees that are complaining have been newly brought on or they don't interact with anybody because they've gone virtual in their workspace. So he said they're not recognizing, like a long picture and what their priorities are and how they believe Netflix have been allies

I respectfully disagree with Joylove!

Second of all, as a cisgendered man to have a comedy special where 30 minutes of your set is essentially devoted to speaking about trans people, I would consider that transphobic. And you said, well, a lot of trans people didn't get offended by it. Well, a lot of trans people did get offended by it

@Joylove https://cnn.it/3nkZAVG @Taylor

There should be trans ignorance, because I think a lot of people who have a reaction against Chappelle and defend him are just not familiar with the trans community in any significant way. And they're more assuming what people feel. And when you talk about that, one person who was a comic who killed herself and that Chappelle talked about the article that I linked gives a good explanation of why that is not a good defense and why that's problematic
