Voting in America

article image placeholderUploaded by @LilahJane
And basically, it's when you're, like, forced to vote and not forced, like, Australia has this where basically, if you don't vote, you get fined. And I used to think this was like, amazing, because the best way to take advantage of our Democratic society is Max participation. But what he said really opened my eyes. There's so many voting restrictions in poor neighborhoods and against people of color that by enforcing this, it would just hurt these people even more

Polarization in the two party system

But in the end, he was like, I'm so relieved. And so it was kind of an awesome class to be taking during that political climate. Also, I rants to just say that I know for me too. I always like, we should just make it mandatory that people vote because that's the best way that we're going to actually get the results of the country that we want

Hello Lilah. I think that this is a really great topic, and I'm glad that you brought this up because I personally feel a little bit like not uneducated, but I have, like, a lot of passionate feelings about this topic, but I don't really have any information backing my feeling. So it's nice to hear this and to just learn a little bit more

It's really good to hear all of you talk about this. And I'm wondering if you think there's a link. I guess I want to ask all three of you this if there's a link between trying to dismantle the two party system, I saw agree with that also to the voting rights issue. Do you think that by having a different kind of system that would also impact the way people perceive voting?

Hi, Lilah. I would try to say something eloquent and informed, but my brain is not turning out something. I think I reserved it all for my other classes, but I will give this to. I bet it one thing that I think it's not exactly towards the voting system per se, but more towards the mentality behind voting. I've noticed for myself as a first time voter during the presidential election and then later on with smaller scale or more regional elections

@N1kkums great point!

But no matter where you're hearing it as objective as political information can be, it is typically communicated by some party that has some interest, especially when it's communicated at a large scale. If you know what I mean, there is going to be some interest behind that communication and in turn, some message behind the medium. Yeah

It will be like if you vote yes on this proposition, this will happen if you don't know, this will happen. And it also just like in an unbiased way defines what it is. So I always look to that. But I do agree. Sometimes there's wording that is a little hard to digest if you are familiar with it so oftentimes, like local political groups in my hometown, I'm going to fly by the name of churches like Butte County Democrats or whatever

So I think ideally, my mind we'd have like, a representative parliamentary system, which I think Israel has this in a few other countries where there's, like multiple parties and say they set it to the same ratio or proportional to the population of the country. And so say, like 2% of people voted for the Purple Party, and so then there'd be two members in 100 person Parliament who are at the Purple Party. So basically just fully represents the schemes of what everyone thinks

Hi, Lilah. Thanks. I totally hear you. I know those little booklets to talk about, and I don't do a good job of reading them, and when I do, I often just feel like I hardly know what's going on, even though I'm sure they definitely definitely did write it for people like me who just are not deeply involved in the issue at hand
