"How to tell if your college is trans-inclusive" by Abbie Goldberg

article image placeholderHow to tell if your college is trans-inclusive
And then she says later on in the article is that even the colleges that do have gender inclusive restrooms tend to have, like, a one room restroom, but they don't have stalls. And so having stalls of gender inclusive restrooms will enable a lot more kids and a lot more students to use it and feel supported. And then, of course, nondiscrimination policies that include gender identity

How do less inclusive environments affect non binary individuals

Hi, Dr. Goldberg. Thank you so much for making the time to be here and to respond to my swell cast. I really hope that the swell community can learn more about how we can support our trans and gender nonconforming students. And so let's jump right into it. So you mentioned that at the start of your article, you mentioned that religiously affiliated universities as well as community colleges, tend to be less inclusive of trans students

Is there a reason all universities do not allow a chosen name?

And some universities actually require you to be called by your legal name. And so my question was just, is there a reason? I guess opponents would say there's a reason University should not allow students to use a chosen name

Next steps for colleges to be more inclusive?

So in the article, you state that trans and nonbinary people tend to report poor emotional health. Then there's just a counterparts and they're more likely to anticipate to use seeking counseling in College. And so you see that it's important that student counseling there's a student counseling center explicitly inclusive of trans people and having a counselor who's experienced in dealing with trans people. I guess my question is currently are there any institutions that do have a center or Department specifically for trans individuals?

How can we better support transgender people?

So for my last question, it's just more of a general question. So I'm aware that there are still quite a few people who declare and say statements like there are only two genders. So how do you advise people respond to these, like rather insensitive claims? And as a a community, how can we better support our nonbinary and gender nonconforming peers

There's chromosomal gender, anatomical gender, reproductive aspects of gender, gender identity, and gender is simply much more complex than we might default to imagining. We can support our non binary and gender nonconforming peers by challenging anti trans rhetoric setting an example of gender inclusiveness using pronouns when we introduce ourselves and respecting trans, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people's names, pronouns, et cetera
