Podcast Movement 2022, Ben Shapiro and DailyWire

article image placeholderUploaded by @johnthemarketer
I'm just kind of wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the tweet, their response to this, and how much of a controversy you think it is that a sponsor sent a representative of their company, one of the largest companies in Pod casting today, to come out and check on his people and meet with some fans that are here at the movement

What are your thoughts surrounding Podcast Movement 2022 and the tweet regarding Ben Shapiro of DailyWire?

Was there some event that happened?

And I probably have more questions than anything, but I'd really like to hear more from people at the show and just kind of what the reaction and feeling is at the show here. Because on Twitter, it seems to be pretty unanimous of the reaction here. And the biggest question I have from people at the show is that Podmov mentioned that they apologize for the harm done. And I'm wondering, when they refer to the harm, are they referring to any specific event or events that happened?

Not that I would want to meet Ben Shapiro. I wouldn't really, because I just don't. But I don't understand the groveling apology, I guess, despite I am part of a marginalized group, I am a woman of color. But it's I don't know. I guess like I said, I didn't even know anything happened. If I had seen him and maybe if he had riled people up, I probably would have been pretty upset about it

And to me, because they are such a titan in this industry, that's kind of unfortunate because regardless of me agreeing with them or not, which I don't agree with everything, there's still something to learn from that company and their way of doing things. Love the conversation so far and I hope it keeps going. I want to hear everybody's opinions on this. Thanks for responding

@johnthemarketer

Then there's going to be a lot of emotions coming at you. And I could imagine that the person have a knee jerk response and come out with the tweet that they did and then start to say things like we should have not had given a booth to the Daily Wire and so on. It will be interesting to see how things play out and what actually happened or didn't happen and so on

Knee jerk reaction from event. Trigger ridden response from Shapiro

It's really kind of cool to see there's different thoughts, events and opinions coming out of the podcasters forum, whether the day off or afterwards. So there's a lot of energy around and I love it. Let's continue the conversation

And I've heard a couple of other people say that it's not a great look on podcast movements part for not even anticipating this is a possibility of happening, which I also see as a point because Ben Shapiro is a co founder of Daily Wires. So obviously it was a possibility that it might happen. And I don't know, I still just kind of feel like maybe everybody should just calm down

Wow. So we know words are powerful, whether they're tapped into a Twitter feed or they're spoken here. And my vote is to never ask people who are to calm down only because it's implying that something is too emotional or too anything, and it shuts people down as opposed to calm them down. So I feel like independent of everyone who's been gorgeously articulate here, it's been such a really important thread. I want to add that emotions are unwieldy

@DBPardes

Well, and thank you for even with differing opinions than other people, for being civil, because that's absolutely correct that we lack that in today's society of being different than each other as far as opinions are concerned, but being civil in that disagreement, if you will. So I can't thank everyone enough for participating in this and having a different opinion than other people may have and still being able to articulate that in a way that is civil. It is different

And that's the one thing that I have taken away from this entire set of classes or anything else, is that at least in this medium, all of our voices are heard and all of our voices matter. So again, to recap on what I started with, I can't thank everyone enough for participating in this and giving your point of view

But bring the actual facts. Read journals to get your fax. Don't just go off with just the news because the news is divisive. The news is often on both sides. The news tells people more what you want to hear, what people want to hear and make me wrong. Bring the facts from the journals. Bring something I want to be proven wrong that a lot of people don't say that and a lot of people don't want to be wrong

And in that regard, I'm very glad that podcast movement has done that, that they thought about it and that they were like, okay, well, maybe something as divisive as the Daily Wire, maybe we should not have allowed them to have a booth. Because if you think about it, there are other big podcasting companies out there. There are other big podcasting adjacent companies that do have booths. There there's Amazon, Music Wondery. I heart media spotify Sirius

Yeah. So I have a bit of a spikey take on this one. Personally, I don't thoughts? Podcast movement tweet Ben to allow everybody to be there. It's their own conference. They could do what they want. And in this case, they chose to take money from the day to Daily Wired, which was their call, and they had to deal with it knowing that there was a chance that something like this could happen. That was something that has already said in the previous comments

Probably not, but I don't know. I definitely think that podcast movement made a decision whether or not they were aware that he would show up. I don't know. They say he wasn't invited, which, I mean, I'm sure he wasn't. That doesn't seem like the kind of place where they would invite someone like him, but given his stature, I guess within Daily Wire, they must have known it was a possibility
@thereelsweett

@CGeronimo

But the thing about this and the conference responding the way they did, saying we shouldn't have done this with their tweet that we shouldn't have allowed, if they actually go through and just ban or say, this person is not allowed, that's not what podcast thing is all about. Podcasting is everyone gets to be involved. And if they're going to do that, then I really don't want to be a part of podcast movement anymore

I think what I'm trying to say is that how much is that apology really sincere, really? Spotify was also there, but they didn't have a huge poster of Joe Rogan, also another controversial figure on Spotify. They could have, but they didn't. But again, podcast Movement can't control that either. So I think even with my severe distaste for Ben Shapiro, I think it's something that does sort of come with the territory. Podcast Movement really can't control that
