Is there room for misogyny in music anymore?

article image placeholderSnoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40, Too $hort Launch Mount Westmore Supergroup
It's a highly gendered genre, for sure, but there are not a lot of genres that are exempt, but this is bringing it up because I'm thinking, when I'm listening to this, I'm feeling nostalgic. I'm listening to Snoop. I'm listening to Too Short. Those two, especially were my favorite. I've been disenfranchised from Ice Cube a little bit more these days. I'm thinking, Am I getting too old? Are they getting too old?

Everything isn’t for everybody @JLMcMillan

But I think that's the reality of it is that some things are ugly and humans are ugly, and we're also very good, and we're beautiful, but we're also ugly, and this is just reflective of it. And I would say all the music I listened to has already been around for 20 years

Words of wisdom!

And sometimes I think there was some kind of scientific study about if you're just analyzing the lyrics, you actually don't get the full experience of enjoying music. So in other words, scientists are saying, if you want to listen to music, get into the rhythm, get into the melody, get into the beat. But anyway, I just really love your reply. Thank you so much

Why are they still doing this?

But on the other hand, the content is problematic, how much of it is tongue and teeth, how much of it is playing on cultural stereotypes and ideas as part of a community and reflecting that community? I'm curious, what is the motivation at this point for these artists to have these kind of lyrics? Is it just being on brand? Is it just trying to appeal to a certain audience? Do they think their audience hasn't matured? They think their audience finds this engaging?

Everything is subjective as @PKBriggs mentioned. Check out Joyner Lucas

I might have listened to the song, and I might have even liked it, even if I didn't necessarily agree with the lyrics, because for me, hip hop personally comes down to a lot of variables that are in order. There's no randomness about it. It has to be this particular order of how things are. And for me, number one has to be content

Pearl Jam can talk about the song of the kids shooting up a school. It's no limitations on the genres and what they can do. But yeah, Snoop Dogg two short E 40. These are hallmarks pioneers and pillars of West Coast hip hop, and it's cool that they're doing something together. I didn't even know that that was the thing to do you had said it. But anyway, these are my thoughts on at least that song and just the topic in general

@FryedOreo @Professor42 @lissahoop Great points all!

It's what I kind of grabbed at, but it's more the gold digger, the writer. That kind of stuff, even using certain words, depending on how it's used, isn't necessarily going to be offensive in context. Definitely about keeping me honest. The last thing I want to do is pit two types of hip hop or rap against each other. And I think that that's an easy comparison to fall into

And I've read articles about this as well. Like, female rappers are like at the top of everything right now, like, the male rappers aren't getting as much of a look in, apart from Lil Nas X, who obviously has his own interesting relationship with masculinity and things like that and plays with that a lot, which is so interesting to see. And I think that's what people are going for

@JLMcMillan @lissahoop staying on brand/the brand is also your your life

We're not just one thing. So that's what I would say. And then as far as music now, of course. Yeah. Definitely marketing and stuff, because the industry, that particular brand of hip hop, it has not a reputation. I don't know what the right word is, but it has a certain sort of edge to it. And if you want to be a performer in that genre, then you have to maintain that edge. And then you got conscious rappers, right?

@Charlieri @PKBriggs

Thanks for your thoughts, Charlie. On essentially the changing of the guard. In many ways, people are looking for something new, and the dynamic is different with female rappers. And it is in many ways kind of like that Swan song. As I noted it's, Guys Night on The Town. There's a charm to that, and there is a defiance as well

@JLMcMillan maybe I should listen more

But I wonder, because we've kind of moved in a different direction culturally, that even a lot of young people, especially with gender becoming questioned and being more open about different sexualities, if some of this would not appeal to younger people because of the fact that hyper masculinity is problematized in a lot of ways for younger people, in a way that wasn't for my and your generation was

@PKBriggs thank you PK

You don't have a lexicon that helps you understand what it is being used for, and it means and then it's right to that it's not necessarily conscious. It's just part of the culture itself. Again, thank you for having a certain amount of patience and explaining this a little bit more

Well, my twelve year old daughter was walking through the room as I was playing this on the stereo and she said, yes, you can kick it already. That's all I had. I don't have any other anything deep to add of the conversation

Perfection!

Hey, Todd, thank you for this. Yes. Actually, this was that album I just finally got on vinyl, and I got it for under $20, which is like, amazing. But anyway, I love your story. And it is kind of a perfect cap. Not to discourage anyone else to reply, but I think we should leave it at the words of a young girl. That's just perfection. Thank you so much
