The Dark and Glimmering Wonderment of Danny Elfman’s Scores

article image placeholderThis Is Danny Elfman
It's Jessica Lee McMillan with Ice Dance, composed by Danny Elfmans scores Edward Scissorhands Soundtrack Today I want to talk about one one of my favorite film composers who runs the soundtrack, probably of every day of the year, but especially as we approach Halloween. In fact, there are 57 days remaining until Halloween. I do have a countdown app

@Ram what is your favorite Elfman score?

Hi, Jessica. Once again, such a great post. It really does justice to Danny Elfman's legacy. You really, you know, sort of said it as perfectly as you can say that his influence sort of knows no bounds. Sounds. I think outside of John Williams, Danny Elfman is certainly my favorite composer for film or TV. He also did The Simpsons theme song, so we can't forget that as well

Also outside of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, which are probably my two favorite scores that he did. I have to give a special nod to Pee Wee's Big Adventure. It was Tim Burton's first Lieback film, I believe. And it is really something else, just the combination. It is as whimsical as it can get. And I feel like it is definitely some of his best work. And it was very early on in his career. Bye

@Taylor Great stories!

And I'm just remembering now the film that I recently watched that he scored, and that was epic, the animated film that's now subsumed by Disney and then The Simpsons. Good call on that. That one is such a huge part of American culture, and not everyone would even know that it's Danny Elfman, and I hope that he gets all the props that he can get. There's actually something that I forgot to mention in my original post, and I just wish I could picture it

Yeah, I just think he's a fantastic composer. He's a wonderful ear from music. Can I compare him between John Williams and Danny often? No, because I love both of them equally in their own merits. Danny is a composer that's very circus driven, very art driven, and John Williams is more classically driven, so they're completely two different styles

And it reminds me of how Scott influenced Bongo was. And I'm a really big Scaffold Midnight Run I forgot about I can't wait to check it out. I don't remember the score, but I remember it being a really entertaining movie, so that's got to go on the next to watch list. But it's funny that it was done in 1988 because the flip side of that is Scrooge, which to me probably was the first time I heard any of his compositions

Pee Wee!

Anyway, the late motif appears in that. Anyway, he's borrowing from some classics. That being said, I really want to listen to Midnight Run and Batman Returns now. And more importantly, I'm going to go back to D*** Tracy. I thought that was visually a stunning piece of entertainment, and I'm pretty sure I really love the music. The Sondheim in it is what caught my attention. But I want to go back and hear that score

Digital Performer!

And then I saw an incredible video featuring Danny Elfman and his homage to Digital Performer. And I fell in love with him. And I just always felt like kinship to him. And I just love this. This great swell of appreciation for him. Really enjoying it. Thank you

More Elfman love @Tim @DBPardes

And yeah, it's an intellectual property question that's also super fascinating. And it's too bad, though, that Alphabet would have gotten any Flack for it, considering the Gothic themes having some influence on his music on some level. And I agree about Edward Scissorhans being the quintessential and probably one of my favorites as well, but I don't know if that's the earliest. I don't know if that's the argument, but I don't know if that's the earliest recognizable sound
