Is the Rock Hall an outdated Institution that deserves torching?

Pop CultureMusicCulture

"…If we separate the art from their actions, she asks, how do we rejigger the Canon, or at least be more honest in accounting for it? It's already problematic to enshrine the wildness and grit of rock. So, for example, Dickinson from Iron Maiden says that putting it rock in a Museum kills it. And the use of the umbrella of the word rock is part of this rock ism that we're starting to dismantle anyway. It excludes other genres and black music.…"

"…I think I forgot to mention that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is next week. So there are all kinds of events leading up to it that you can check out online. And of course, there are several articles about it. So it's interesting to unlike language and see that reverence for it. Thanks. Bye.…"

The ceremony is next week

"…I guess you could say I'm using air quotes here to see some of my favorite artists from when I was a teenager being acknowledged. But it's also very disheartening to know that bands like Jethro Toll, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Allison Chains, these bands are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And to me, that means that your credibility is absolutely destroyed.…"

"…Okay. You've got me looking at some definitions here, too, that I found that I just want to read out to be eligible for induction. Artists have to have had released their first record 25 years earlier and have created music whose originality impact and influence has changed the course of rock and roll. That's according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and then also in the Britannica, they say musicians become eligible after 25 years. The Foundation's nominating committee.…"

Who are these "500 music experts" ?

"…Thanks, Jessica, for bringing up this topic. I didn't even know that the induction of the Rock Hall of Fame was coming up. I don't follow this at all. I'm not a huge music fan in terms of looking at the history of it and something that my husband, who is a musician, would probably find interesting. So I should ask him what his opinion of this is. But I was surprised to find out that so few women had been inducted in the past.…"

"…And I've followed hall of Fame for a long time, especially when I was younger, especially the sports organizations. And over the years I've seen things happen that I'm just like, very sullied about the hall of Fame in general. And with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's very subjective. I mean, you can look at number one hits, you can look at best selling albums, but what is the criteria that gets you in?…"

Absolutely outdated!

"…And it's hard these days to look up information in our busy minds. But if there is something like that or anyone, is there a collective that recognizes other artists, it would be really great to see they would be able to determine how to raise each other up without being so corporate breath and fake. Thanks so much, everyone.…"

How to celebrate our favourites. And thanks!

"…He said that Elvis, Michael Jackson and I don't remember the other person. He said. We're all in a category in themselves. And I guess he's saying that the one since then is kind of like, I guess they're popular. They get put into the hall of Fame, but that doesn't necessarily reflect quality. I didn't ask him what would be a solution or competing organic way or how else could they be doing this?…"

I asked my musician husband what he thought.

"…Hi, Jessica. Thank you for starting this conversation. First of all, I have to admit, something kind of embarrassing, which is that I didn't actually know that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was a real thing. Like, I thought it was a turn of phrase, like someone has been so popular, they've been immortalized into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I didn't know it was like an actual organization.…"

Rock and roll Old Boys Club?

Jessica McMillan

@JLMcMillan · 12mo ago · 1:32

"…Charlie, I love what you have to say about that threshold of the 25 years being anachronistic, really, and being a very poor measure of any kind of equitability, particularly for women. And I agree it's definitely an old boys club. There's no doubt I just really love the way you articulate it. So thank you so much for chiming in. And Melissa, thank you so much for surveying your husband. That's really interesting. And I have heard that criticism before that.…"

"…Like Piggy and Tupac and some of those guys that have been inducted, they are the epitome of rockstars, whether you like hip hop or not. That's unfortunate. If you don't, you have to look past some things. You have to understand hip hop as a culture. Movement is a powerful thing to a lot of people. I understand people rock or rap, usually. Typically it means they're racist.…"

"…And you really can't have an event if you don't have anybody that's elected or electable. And I think he raised a great point. If there's nobody electable, then they've got to go back and start reaching in to the old grab bag and start putting people that maybe didn't belong in the first place. And so that's what I've seen in baseball, where it's gone from a small, elite club to a hey, let's welcome everybody in.…"
