Wedding Songs—What are your must haves and deal breakers?

article image placeholderUploaded by @JLMcMillan
Hi, it's Jessica Lee McMillan with the specials. A message to you, Rudy. This is a song that I included on my must have for my wedding about ten years ago now, and I wanted to share or hear from you. Actually, what are your deal breakers for a wedding list?

From the POV of a wedding DJ 😹

However, I have an interest in take on this, I guess as someone who used to be a wedding DJ, that was one of my many jobs when I was supporting myself through graduate school, and it was so fun to play that role for people getting married because music brings people together and dancing in a way that is just so unique and one of my favorite parts of being human, I think and for each couple it was so different working with them on the kind of vibe that they wanted to have overall, because usually you have at least a couple of hours of dancing time if you're lucky

Too cool!

But he only gave us, like, 30 songs, which you think is generous. But I wanted every song. But yeah, it's really cool when you get people from different generations. In my case, I had a lot of people from kind of out country. But then a lot of alternative people, like my wedding dress was black. And so to hear that mix of music and out there songs, I made sure to include a few

Great memories

Oh, Jessica, I love this and is taking me back to my own wedding. 23 years ago, my wife and I took the example of my brother. He elected not to hire a DJ, but to pre select 150 songs, put the CDs, cassettes and vinyl in a milk crate, and had his friends play them in a random order at the reception. That's what we did. Although I hired two College kids to spin the records, but they couldn't bring any music

I can really picture it.

Tim, I would have loved to have attended your wedding. What a wonderful range of genres and just the perfect way to get people up and dancing, maybe even get them out of their comfort zone without having having to resort to Top 40s

@Tim

This has been such a remarkably nice, just a pleasant conversation to listen to. I'm actually in the process of planning my wedding, and I'm really glad that I listened to this because I actually my fiance and I decided that we are not going to hire a DJ as well. And I have the responsibility of putting a playlist together. It's going to be everything from 90s gangster rap to Motown to the Jonas Brothers, which is my fiance's favorite band, to some Armenian music

So good to hear!

Hey, Taylor, I'm Super happy that this post and the replies helps you out because there's a lot of information and advice. I think that flies at you when you're doing a wedding and especially if it's a DIY type wedding. Mine very much was as I did. We got a pretty good deal by doing most of the work, and it turned out really beautifully
