What About Your Music Taste Would Surprise Other People?

article image placeholderUploaded by @iamatopodcast
Hi, everyone. May peace beyond you all, and I hope you're having a great morning. And I was sitting here, you know, doing my usual morning work. For those who might not know, apart from my podcasting, I do some VA work, work for other podcasters. I also do some podcast editing and a bunch of stuff here and there. So I was just doing my morning routine

And if I just go to my Apple Music and just hit shuffle on all of the songs that are on my Apple Music that I've downloaded, it is an eclectic taste of potpourri of genres. And people who ride with me are often shocked. Interestingly enough, they are shocked about my interest in hardcore ratchet trap music, rap. Let me tell you, I love me some trap music and I'm like, how would you think that I not liked trap music?

@iamatopodcast (My fave instruments: cello, bass, guitar, piano, etc.)

When I hear music, I feel it whether it's on my skin, in my muscles, in my gut, on my bones. There's a sensory experience or even on the back of my neck or in my skull. So some songs are like this almost euphoric experience or they're not always euphoric, but they're pleasant in some way. And then there are other songs that I just cannot tolerate. And so the bass is something that I love. I can feel that in my gut

But then there are other things that are not in the mainstream that I also like. I think the entire purpose of this is that as society, we have this tendency of putting other people in boxes, and sometimes even ourselves, that we only give ourselves permission to explore certain kinds of music because we feel that that's an expectation of us

@iamatopodcast

Yeah, I understood the question, but I didn't know how to answer it in the sense that for myself, internally, I don't have expectations about what I should or ought to like or not like, based on who others perceive me to be or even who I perceive myself to be

🤔

And that has nothing to do with subject matter. But I do find more often than not I get bored by the socially conscious. Let's lift up the community rap, that's the most boring rap for me most of the time, but anyway but I grew up listening to Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Collective Soul, Primus Cake, Beck, tons of different stuff. So I would say my first love is hip hop, but everything else is second

I think it's so interesting that you mentioned I did not know that anchor like it was something other than a podcasting platform and the way you would find music on Spotify. It's so interesting. Need to try that out. But thank you for your perspective. I think it's very fascinating how different people have so many different kinds of taste. And I think I only brought in the question in a sense that I wanted to see how people view themselves. I think that's about it

Hi. Please don't please don't apologize. It's I didn't want to need to put you in a spot. There is no right or wrong answer to any of this. I think for me it's just just an exploration of how people view themselves. And again, I think I applaud you for being as you are, genuinely as you are not conforming to anything. I think I see myself a lot in that way

yep, there’s one song that surprises even me

I love it. Yes, Missy Ella, it certainly breaks the stereotype of my preconceived notion of what you might be listening to. What a wonderful question. Okay. Now, if you were to meet me in person or get to know me over the course of a couple of months or years on social audio, you realize, based on my crooning and Ukulele stylings that as a 55 year old man who passes for white, I'm into songs of the 80s

I don't think I can, like, surprise anybody, kind of give it away. I wear my music on my sleeve, like, literally, Morrison on my arm and microphones. I don't even know how many tattoos and microphones I have, but anyway, I am thankful to have been raised on, like, very bipolar type with music

And at the same time, it might not be that you look into other songs that little masks, but just that you found it and you love it so much. I think it's so great

People who do know me know this about me, but I think when people meet me and first meet me, they assume as an artist, I'm also a music person, but it's hard to get me to open my mind to new music. I don't know why, but I mean, I have my theories, but yeah, so that's my music thing

I feel where you come from and I feel that unless that new artist has something really remarkable, I'd be like, oh, I listen to more music. But otherwise it's like it's the same. Literally, like maybe five, six bands that I have that are on repeat. But I think again, that's so interesting how you say that. Again, I am also from the creative. I am a graphic designer by trade

And recently, I just played my very, very old heavy metal playlist that reminds me of my dad. And my dad is a big fan of Iron Maiden. And you see. I'm a 30 year old Latina. And I was driving to Starbucks. And I was on my way to grab my coffee. And the barista that handed me the coffee at the moment that she was handing me the coffee. It was like. In the middle of the dance of the dance song

I think it's so interesting that you mentioned that you have, like, a spotify playlist for every single mood that you could have any given day. I think that's so fantastic. I usually like. I have spotify, but I don't use the playlist. I usually have Pandora, and then it just mixes up with the different genres that I'm into, but I think it's something that I'm I'd consider just have a different mood. Playlist per say

Or maybe these people here that I'm producing this radio show would like to listen something that is more current, like songs that are on Billboard charts and stuff. So I used to find that so relaxing because I just feel like I love discovering new music just as much as I love remembering music that people don't think about. When I decided to, like, I don't know, like Spotify, I just have all of these playlists because I found it very easy
