About AANHPI

Originating as “Asian-Pacific Heritage Week” in 1977, the month of May has since become recognized as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month in the United States. While this particular month was chosen to help commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants and the May 1843 completion of the Transcontinental Railroad (which largely involved the labor of Chinese immigrants), May now serves as a time to celebrate the incredibly diverse and varied experiences of indigenous, immigrant, and diasporic AANHPI communities.
