Session 22: Hate Speech vs Vigorous Conversation about Hateful Things | Where’s Your Line in the Sand?

article image placeholderUploaded by @DBPardes
Hey, it's Deborah. I'm doing session 22 at the end of 2022, so it seems pretty appropriate. I wanted to talk about the difference between hate speech and vigorous discussion about hateful things. There's a big difference, but I want your input on this because it's been swirling in my head. I've been in conversation with a lot of people here on Swell

It just doesn't make sense to me. I think people have too much time on their hands and too much control over other people. Getting hired and fired are getting a position here or getting a position there just because they don't like them or they don't like what they're saying or like what they're doing. It doesn't make sense. But I just thought I'd jump in and throw that at you and give you something to think about. Have a good day

Discussing about something in your house which has discussing something hate. Hateful in your house which discusses that hateful thing all the time, which as you grow up in an environment of that sort, the hate gets normalized. So when this person goes out in the world, chances are the way they define hate versus the way we define hate is different

I feel awful saying this, but I think they do because probably this lack of empathy around them is what has led to their very judgmental words coming from me here, which has probably led to their descent into these ideologies. People are endorsing fascism even if we are being taught in correct history. It's ridiculous. It is ridiculous how globally we are seeing a dissent towards that

Transparency is really important because it doesn't waste time. We know what people stand for. The experience of hearing them stand for it is horrible. And then the question is, what do we do afterwards when that exchange happens? And we all have thoughts. We all have thoughts about. Like you said, Bernard, we want things to be different. We want people to go away. But I think this is so critical. I think both of you really suggest, maybe let's have it out

But that should not shut the door to having a discussion, to having the back and forth. Because without that, what we end up with is exactly as Bennetti said. We end up with these things festering in our heads and then having it explored in different ways in society. It is so fundamentally important, I believe, to be able to talk about these things and to not be shut down when in the process of discussing it, if things are incorrectly said

@DBPardes "... An imperfect tool sometimes taken to an extreme, sometimes abused."

Or if we talk about the Scandinavian countries who have more trust in each other and in their government and how that ripples out and affects things, right? And we can look at how the US. Started on a lot of toxic foundations, and then instead of bringing that shame and vile s*** to the surface, unearthing it and changing anything, we've pushed it under the carpet, and it's like the wounds have festered and so there is toxicity at the root

If you go back and you look at Hitler, for example, he hated Jews, but he hated them for a reason that really was not a real reason. And people bought into that because of the times that they were in. People were struggling to survive. It was after World War I and Germany had been defeated and people were starving. And so they needed someone to hate. They needed someone to be the blame of everything that was wrong in their lives

That's the way it is. And it's just your view. It may be your narrow view, but yet still it is your view and some people push back. So the conversation needs to be had. But if you're not going to be open and willing to discuss it, then what's the point? You're just there to agitate the situation, to put gasoline on the fire
