Life is neither kind nor hostile. It is merely indifferent. #askswell

I came across an interesting quote by Carl Sagan this morning. He says the universe is neither kind nor hostile, it is merely indifferent. And as I thought about it, I realized we go through life thinking or assuming that people are either kind, unfriendly towards us, or they're hostile and have a sort of resentment or hatred for us. But is that really true?

So when I think about is the natural course of people to just be indifferent and stay in their lane and take care of their own. I think we live in such compressed times, such tight quarters, metaphorically speaking, that we're bombarded with who we are to each other all the time through social media, through news that I think maybe in the past people were just kind of doing their Switzerland, if you will. But I think now, I think there's a lot of fear

I love the way it said, especially when it comes to people, nine times out of ten, people are not even thinking about us. They are thinking about their own lives. And in turn, we may feel neglected or we may feel as if they're jealous or what have you. Not even true. So I absolutely love this. I love this. I love this

@DBPardes I was initially thinking about this topic purely from the law of nature perspective. But you brought in the individual aspect. Appreciate...

Hello, Deborah. Thanks very much for chiming in. And you raise a very valid point. Indifference on the level of the collective human beings can create societies or runs the risk of creating societies that hinder collective growth. And as like you said, as human beings, we sort of wired to look out for each other. And as a species, I think that's one of the key ingredients, if you will, that got us this far. Right

And the reality is that you can't. There are some things that are beyond your control and the sooner you accept them for what they are, what it is, the more comfortable you are at moving on with your life. So I feel life, a lot of the good and bad that we have created for ourselves maybe sort of happens to come from this place that we are unable to accept certain things for what they are and that is piling up as a cause of unhappiness. Maybe

So my fate now will lie in the hands of chance by my own resourcefulness and potential. And here, the universe, as an impersonal, as an indifferent entity, it will not actively respond to my plight. So here the universe, devoid of humanlike qualities, operates according to its own laws and processes without the concern for our experiences. And ultimately, I would say, how one perceives the universe is a deeply personal and a subjective matter

@Pragati.chopra loved your pointers πŸ˜„

So, yeah, you're right, the mountains and the rivers are not going to change their course to help you, but another human being definitely can change his or her plans in order to come and help you. And then the other point that you mentioned, how we understand the universe is a very personal experience. Absolutely no two people think of or understand universe the same way

@geo_rhymes compassion regardless of appearance or behaviour

And the media, they are placing undue importance on appearances. So encouraging a society that embraces diversity and emphasizes on internal qualities like kindness, intelligence, talent, compassion, it can help combat body shaming. And talking about the indifferent attitude of people, I would say it's better to acknowledge a humanity in a person and recognize that they are facing certain challenges. You should respond with empathy and understanding rather than reacting with hostility. I feel compassion

I was in karnavati, chefar coach and I had booked a seat well in advance and I was not able to enter my trains coach. There were so many commuters who were without booking a ticket entering the train. And of course, I missed my train. I'm not risking falling in the tracks. I would rather do a taxi. But for a brief moment, I kind of detested these people and they were not getting in that coach to inconvenience me

@Binati_Sheth thats a unique angle - we're driven by convenience πŸ’―

What are the things that I can do to conveniently arrive at my goal, my destination, and much of our day and much of our life? That is what drives most of us completely fair. But there are also extraordinary circumstances in which a lot of normal human beings step up to the occasion. Like COVID was one such example where people risked their own life and their convenience to help their fellow human beings. But then again, these are extraordinary examples in extraordinary times

I think even in receiving bad news, it's not indifference. But it could be that you just sit with it for moment, but at some point in time you're going to make a choice about it. That's just my thought

But yeah, in the human to human interaction, every day, every moment, we are making a choice of whether we want to be mindful in our interaction with the other person or if we are willing to mindlessly, we speak and do things that may or may not harm the other person. Now, thank you for your input. It's very thoughtful and thought provoking. I appreciate it

Because I have more of my will and my desire to achieve my goal and to create the life that I desire is greater than the air quotation, the man, and it's great than the system and the universe, which is it life, which is it in itself doesn't favor one versus the other. It just paves the way based on my action or my inaction. And that's my philosophy on the topic

@Her_Sisu you've raised some points I hadn't considered before.

And herein comes another fundamental truth of the universe the human being, the person who is determined and has a desire to excel, to grow, the universe will bend to their desire or their determination. The laws of the universe just somehow seem to bend for or bow down to this person of immense desire and determination. And that being said, I'm also starting to wonder if making a statement such as the universe is neither bad nor good, it is merely indifferent is a statement of privilege
